Hi over the summer i wanted to take Latin, along with AP Environmental Science on FLVS to help my GPA. Is it possible to complete Latin 1 by the end of summer(June-August 22)? What is the class's difficulty level? Thanks in advance

Like all
classes, it really depends on your teachers and your own self determination. I’m a freshman & in latin4. It is possible that you could complete level 1 using the Cambridge Latin series though it really depends on how you can handle your workload

It’s really important that you have some sort of intrinsic motivation to learn Latin. It can be frustrating at times, and that motivation can really help you over the hump. The difficulty depends on your ability to memorize and essentially apply rules. It’s a lot more challenging than any other language, regardless of the fact that there is no speaking portion of the course.

I am going to take Latin I over the summer as well. I’m predicting that the course load will not be too difficult. It is a language course however I’ve always been good at understanding languages quickly. I’m planning to finish it by the end of summer too. I think it’s definitely doable if you are determined enough. Do not procrastinate.

I don’t know what FLVS but I’d say that if you want to do in three months what we normally do in nine months at school, it’s totally possible assuming you don’t have a lot of other responsibilities. You just have to spend three times as much time on Latin than you would if you were taking it in school. So like instead of one hour/day, three hours a day. But because you don’t have a teacher, you might be more efficient, so possibly you could get it down to less time. If you’re dedicated to it, I’m sure you can do it.

I took Latin I on FLVS…and I stopped there. It’s pretty much worthless to learn such on uncommon language over the computer, at least for me, the understanding just was never there. I kept putting it off and off and off and spent about a year on this class. I’m taking French at the local community college and it’s a million times easier- so it’s really not your language ability, just the foreignness and medium that make it hard. My teacher was nice though, didn’t drop me when he probably should have. I’ve been researching APES annnnnddddd students make it sound terrible. Upsetting ;( APAH and the AP econs online aren’t too bad though. Good luck.

My daughter is taking Latin I on FLVS. I would second what LoseYourself said- if you are motivated you should do well. I think that doing the whole Latin I in one summer would be going at such a pace that it will limited what you get out of it.

Funny to see this post bumped up again. I guess this could be considered a reply to my original post on this thread, I actually did take and have finished Latin I on FLVS during the summer.

In fact, I managed to finish the entire course in just 4 weeks but I would assume that this isn’t normal behavior for most students. It is definitely possible to finish Latin I on FLVS during the summer. It takes a good amount of motivation and the ability to grasp Latin concepts quickly which is easier said than done so if you are having trouble, please talk to your Latin instructor. The course itself isn’t all that difficult and although I liked the course, I think that it didn’t go as “in depth” as much as I would’ve like it to but hey, that’s why it’s Latin I in the first place, merely an intro to the language.

I don’t know how difficult the specific class you’d be taking would be, but generally Latin I isn’t difficult at all- just memorize the tables of conjugations and declensions!
