Laundry/Dry Cleaning

Hi,

I was wondering what sort of clothes i need to bring...and also how i am supposed to wash them. i have a few pieces of clothing that i have to get dry cleaned (but not often), but i see on the Cleanerama website (Cleanerama Dry Cleaners and Coin Laundry - New Orleans Metro Area) that dry cleaning costs a lot ($10.99 and up for a dress?)...at home, i can dry clean for $1.99!

I also saw that Tulane has some laundry services and also pay-as-you-go bundles?
Any recommendations?

Leave those dresses that need dry cleaning at home or find a place near school that is cheaper. Learn how to wash your own clothes, it’s cheaper (since you complained about the price of dry cleaning) and it’s about time you did. Shame on you if your mother still washes your clothes.

i do my own laundry. but i dont know how laundry goes at college. like how much i have to pay each time i use the machine?

Quarters or swipe cards-billed to your account

ok thanks. i have more random questions if anyone can help me:

how much does it cost each time to do laundry? 50 cents? 10 cents?

for clothes that cannot be tumble dried, where can i hang them dry? and also for things that have to be hand washed…

This is LuckyMe’s daughter. I just graduated from college, so hopefully I can help a little bit. I checked on the Tulane website and it’s $1.50 per wash-and-dry cycle (meaning one wash and one dry). That’s about average for a college campus. As for hanging clothes, you should buy a drying rack (they sell them for not a lot of money at places like Target and Bed, Bath and Beyond) or you can always just drape them over chairs or furniture in your room. Your dorm might also provide a drying rack in the laundry room, but they tend to fill up pretty quickly. This is something you might want to talk to your roommate about, since it makes more sense to share one.

Oh, and about those dresses that need to be dry-cleaned…bring one or two, but only wear them 1) when you need to wear something really special and 2) when you’re not concerned about things being spilled on you (like at a crowded party or orientation event). I had a few dry-clean only dresses that I wore at school, but if you’re smart about it you don’t have to get them cleaned every time you wear them. Also, when you get to campus you should take a walk and try and find a cheap dry-cleaner, or ask your RA about it. Places with websites generally charge more.

I hope this was helpful! You’re going to have a great time in college :)

thanks for all the help!!! i guess now all i have to do is find a less expensive dry cleaner…

There are dry cleaners on Magazine Street. It would be worth checking out if any of them pick up.
