Laundry Question-Random

Hey guys,

This is kinda a random question about the laundry system. How do the laundry machines actually work? I get that they are free and everything, but I mean do you just put the laundry in and it washes and drys it for you all in one cycle or can you just do a wash only cycle. The reason I ask this is for clothes that would shrink up if they were to be dried in a drying machine, meaning that I would want to just wash them and then hang-dry them in my dorm room. Is that possible the way they are set up? Kinda weird question, but I am curious! If anyone could help me out that would be great!

Thanks,
DD

Separate washers and dryers. You have to move your stuff from the washer to the dryers, so yep, you could get a drying rack for your room if you have stuff you don’t want to go in the dryer.

The laundry rooms also have LaundryView (laundryview.com), so you can check from your room if there’s an open washer before lugging all your laundry down.

dd-If you dry them at the proper temperature they will not shrink. Read the care labels on your clothes. Don’t think your future roommate will appreciate your damp unsightly clothes hanging around the tiny dorm room or on a drying rack. Maybe just your delicates and hand washables. Ask your RA to explain how the machines work if you are confused.

oh, so there are separate washers and dryers. that is good to know.

and it wouldn’t be everything that i would be rack-drying, just a few of pieces of clothing.

thanks for the help,
DD

I think this, actaully, is a great question!

Just remember to bring any fabric softener and dryer sheets (and, of course, detergent) that you want to use. None of that is provided in the laundry rooms.

There is also a laundry service - Wake Wash - if you wanted to send laundry out and for dry cleaning.

The dryers do tend to fry things but I find that if I dry regular clothes on a gentle cycle and if I take delicate stuff out a little bit early that it isn’t a problem. As for hang drying stuff, people do do it, but a drying rack takes up quite a bit of space in a dorm room, so people tend to do it only for things that it would be really bad to dry them.

In my dorm, the washers and dryers are okay. My clothes tend to shrink too – I put them in for half of a cycle and then hang them dry. My roommate and I put up stick-on hooks around our room (they’re hardly noticeable when nothing is hanging on them) and we hang out stuff that can’t be dried for a full cycle on there to fully dry.

Most people do not have a problems with our dryers, though. Then again, every laundry room is different (it depends what dorm you are in).

A good thing about Wake, though, is that they have a website where you can “track” your laundry and figure out how many minutes are left in your cycle. You can even get text messages when your laundry is done (if you do a full cycle).

Once you start a washer, it will lock until the cycle is done, but you can open the dryers at any time. In my dorm, all the washers and dryers are separate (washers do not have drying capabilities). I hope this helped :)
