Hello everyone!
Im so excited to write there! One of my friend suggested me this forum! I hope you are all safe!
im from Marseille France and im currently a second year law student! And i wanted to know if there are any possibilities for me to study law in the US? If im not mistaking, law is a graduate degree whcih isnt the case in France. Can i take the LSAT alone? How can i prepare my self to it? My university proposes exchange programs but unfortunately it’s not studying the american law… it’s just to ‘’ exchange ‘’ and follow random classes ( related to french law.)
Im looking forward to have answers
Kind regards
STAY SAFE!

My ultimate goal will be to teach law in a US university!
I can tell my grades if needed by the way
What school do you attend in France?
OP: You need to research LLM (masters of laws) degree programs in the US in Comparative Law. These programs designed for graduates of foreign (non-US) law schools are typically 9 to 10 months long. One must have earned a foreign law degree prior to enrolling.Earning an LLM in Comparative Law is the first & most significant step toward earning eligibility to sit for a state bar examination in–if I recall correctly–any of 5 states in the US. (New York & Washington state are two of the 5 states.)
As a law student in France, you are studying Civil Code Law (often referred to as Napoleonic Code). The US legal system is based on English common law–which is a much more difficult legal system. In the United States, only the state of Louisiana legal system is a Civil Code legal system.
There are about 200 ABA (American Bar Association) accredited law schools in the US. Most divide them into 4 tiers of 50 law schools with the first tier being the most prestigious due in large part to the quality of the law students.
P.S. Although I am not sure, I do not think that graduates of foreign law schools are required to take the LSAT exam for entrance into an LLM in Comparative Law program.
Those with foreign law degrees earned in a non-English speaking country will be required to take the TOEFL (test of English as a foreign language).
Teaching in an ABA accredited law school in the US typically requires stellar academics & publications.
A law degree in the US is a JD degree (juris doctorate). One must earn a four year undergraduate degree prior to entering a 3 year JD degree program in the US.
Thanks! I think that in France my law degree ( bachelor ) is 3 years and not .4 But i think that i will be eligible to apply to those programs !
Do i have to search LLM comparative law ( which is a specific degree ) or i can choose every LLM like ‘’ LLM environenmental law ‘’
LLM in Comparative Law if you want to sit for a state bar exam in the US.
Most, maybe all, US LLM programs require students with foreign law degrees to complete certain courses in common law.
In short, it may vary by law school LLM program.
Many foreign LLM degree candidates do not plan to remain in the US. (Not sure of the significance of this statement other than you may be free to pursue an LLM degree in Environmental Law. You certainly can do so in Tax Law after taking a few required courses due to your foreign law degree based in civil law.)
I really want to become an attorney in the US. Takingthe bar exam and starting practicing in the US.
My goal is to become a defense attorney or / and a law teacher.
