I will weigh in, too, on the visit during ‘Admitted Student’ days. I pushed and pushed my D to go back for another look, and even though she decided not to (been there/done that) she ended up choosing Lawrence. She had enough memories of how it ‘felt’ and I reminded her how many times she told me she liked it best/how many times she worried, ‘What if I don’t get in?’ If money is a factor for a return visit or if there are other factors prohibiting another visit, maybe after the more recent visits to other colleges you/your teen can sit and make a list of pro/con moments at all the schools. In fact, my D got a much better scholarship offer from another school that really wanted her, but what she really wanted was LU. Good luck with it. It is so hard when multiple colleges are bidding for the kids, and the kids can only choose one school to start with!

Agree 100% with Lawrencemom. Another suggestion–look long and hard at the web site to bring back how it felt to be there. Most college web sites are very good these days, and Lawrence’s is no exception.

S attended Admitted Student Day, even though he had already made up his mind, just to have the experience of overnighting in a dorm. It was a good idea, he got a feel for the various dorms and their cultures which helped him make his choice list for housing.

Also, in terms of the letter arriving, S’s was lost in the mail for several long, agonizing days (finally arrived looking worse for the wear). He did get an email, as I recall, congratulating him on his acceptance, possibly it was timed to arrive after the envelope was supposed to be here.

Congrats to all accepted! S is doing great and loves Lawrence!

D received fin aid package from Lawrence last night. Balanced with loans, grants, work study and previously received merit aid, it was more or less what we expected. Anybody else? Did they meet your expectations?

Nothing but campus study (and merit D was already notified about previously). Also what we expected. Although I am curious whether that is “work study” in the federally funded sense, or something else. Couldn’t tell from the letter.

About how long did it take for you to get notice of FA award (after you submitted FA application)? Just submitting mine this week and wondering about turnaround time…
Thanks

FAFSA was submitted 1/1/13. CSS Profile probably a couple of days later. So quite a while ago. We did not do the Lawrence specific form, since we did the Profile.

Submitted FAFSA on 1/2/2013, CSS profile was done on 1/7/2013. Used IRS retrieval and sent W-2 forms and signed tax return on 2/6/2013.

Does anyone know, based on past experience, when Lawrence tends to release its RD admissions decisions?

Thanks!

cardwriter - My son applied RD also and is still waiting to hear. The wait certainly isn’t making Lawrence any higher on son’s list. He withdrew his applications at two other schools today (he had already been accepted).

3/20 is the first date anyone who is not international posted about hearing an RD decision last year (most LACs seem to tell their international students first for whatever reason). MomTeacherNurse, this is a pretty typical timeline for an LAC – almost every one of them in the top 70 LACs is giving out admissions decisions “by April 1”, and usually that really means starting around March 20. Your son could have applied EA if he really wanted an earlier decision… don’t blame Lawrence for following the same method almost all LACs follow, especially where there is an EA option.

Agree with intparent, my kids have applied to a bunch of LACs and second half of March is pretty typical for RD decisions. Working on my second kid that has applied to Lawrence, and I have found it to be as or more timely than most.

Update on FA application – we submitted everything by email on 2/28 and received FA award package in the mail on 3/10 (east coast). Pretty impressive turnaround time on Lawrence’s part, I think.

mdnhmass - I agree. They were the first school to send us FA package. I think it was around 2/22. Maybe there are not that many students applying for need-based aid?

In my experience (D is sophomore) LU does a pretty fast and decent job of FA turnaround and answers to any/all questions I ask. According to the college’s ‘Fast Facts’ for 2012, 932 ‘domestic’ students of 1423 students received need-based aid (my kid is one of them). We have the federal student loans, and the college has been generous with need-based, on-campus work at a very part-time job, and a financial ‘scholarship’ awarded at admission (it continues each year as long as a “C” average is maintained). As tuition increased last year, so did the merit aid to help cover the cost. We just did FAFSA last weekend, so haven’t gotten a package offer for next year, yet. I am not saying we do not pay tuition: we do, but I feel the college has been helpful in making it possible to choose LU for the same cost in our case that we would pay at a large school that probably would offer little to no financial aid at all because of sheer size/numbers/endowments/applicant numbers/etc.

intparent - DS could not have applied EA even if he wanted to because he applied to the conservatory and you can only apply RD. We are not blaming LU for anything; we are simply impatient. Because DS has received acceptances and scholarship offers from other LACs (and the other schools to which he’s applied) and nothing from LU, it just sort of makes LU get pushed to the side as he’s going over offers from the other schools. He’s ruled 2 schools out and withdrew his applications from those. I’m afraid he will rule out LU simply because the others are fresh in his memory. I think he has enough sense to not rule out LU before hearing from them. We’ll see. :-)

We filed our FA paperwork at the end of February and got the reply in the mail – in France! – within two weeks. Best of all, we got the amount we needed to make it all work, so we are very happy!

DS2 received acceptance in mail today!

S accepted today with a great scholarship! Lawrence is his first choice, so we are thrilled!

D received what looks like acceptance today! Have to wait until she gets home from work to open it and see if FA is included!
