Lawrenceville School Thread

Also, can any current students comment on the orchestra? Is it a “full” orchestra (strings, brass, woodwinds) or a smaller, chamber orchestra?

Sorry, I have not been on the prep school section too much since I have been busy with college.

Invent - hmm active clubs that is a tough one since we have so many. A lot of the clubs are fairly active meaning they have at least one large event each year. Clubs that are not active are removed pretty quickly since we have a great coordinator for all of the clubs. All of the active clubs also do active campaigning for new members on club night which is within the first few weeks of school. Do you have a specific interest? I can tell you which active clubs would fit that. Otherwise I guess I can just laundry list a handful…

expat - dance is a VERY active program. Dance is an option for fulfilling Lville’s sports requirement. I believe it meets 4 or 5 days a week after class. There are also a number of dance groups at school, some of which compete with other schools in the region. A number of boys dance too since the instructor has a fitness-dance program called “Body by Derek.” The instructor is also a housemaster for a senior boys dorm so he does active recruiting there. By far though, the largest event is the Spring Dance Concert. SDC is a huge event where a fair amount of the student body puts on several performances, regardless of skill. Overall, Lville has a great dance program.

mountainhiker - I believe Lville has a chamber orchestra, but I play piano so I am not sure. On another note, based on your username, Lville has an Outdoor Leadership program that works as a sport too. The sport culminates in a 10 day backpacking trip. The crew just got back from Patagonia over spring break.

How big are these clubs approx.? What major competitions do they go to? 1. MUN 2. Debate Club 3. Math Club 4. Science Club 5. Eco Fed Challenge.

What other schools (league) do you compete with for sports? How many golf teams do you have (varsity, jv, 3rds)? How competitive are golf tryouts? Thanks.

1) MUN - not sure, maybe about 30 people? did well at a competition at Yale
2) Debate - probably about the same size as MUN. I believe they competed at a tournament at Princeton
3) Math team - 20-30 people - local NJ competition
4) Science Olympiad - 20 people - very active in the NJ area and more upon making it past regionals and such. They have some videos on youtube I believe.
5) I do not know what this is… time to start a new club?

Our main rivals are in the MAPL (mid atlantic prep league). They are mostly schools in the area such as Peddie, Blair, Hun, Mercersberg, Hill, and a few others that I cannot remember. But we compete with schools from all over the place - day schools too. The hockey team especially faces a lot of teams, even some from Canada.

Golf is somewhat competitive. It is really nice having a course on campus. I think it is just Varsity and JV

Do freshmen get singles, doubles, or a mix? Can you request a single?

Do you have a grill or something open after the dining hall closes?

Are there Microwaves in the common rooms of the dorms?

Can one go to the library or an academic department to study in the evenings?

Do you have study hall? what hours?

What time is lights out? internet out? Thanks.

1) Lower is all singles except for 2 doubles (I think). I believe people are put into rooms randomly.
2) Dorms have grills. But the dining hall is open until 7 and there are restaurant across the street. You may also order take out
3) Yes there are microwaves and fridges
4) Yes
5) Freshmen year there is a strict study hall from 8-10:45. Doors are open, cell phones are in the halls, and there will be a teacher on duty to keep things quiet. Ideally, such strict rules will serve as guidelines in sophomore-junior year. Sophomore-junior year is more of “quiet hours” and the times vary depending on the dorm. Senior year there is no study hall because by senior year, students should be able to determine there own work ethic.
6) Lights out and internet out are at 10:45 freshmen year, 11:15 sophomore-junior year, and none senior year

Hi everyone, we are new to College Confidential but my daughter was accepted to Lville and we are in the final stages of the decision process. Thanks for all the great information and I’d love to hear more about logistics: spending money, charge accounts (for Jigger Shop, grill, etc.) and laundry (does everyone send out or are there kids who still do their own?)

Thanks!

Welcome to CC!
spending money: my parents usually give me some cash at the start of each term, but I also have a debit card for buying things online (mostly train ticket & textbooks) and emergencies. There is an atm in the dining center and two banks across the street from Lville

charge accounts: Jigger shop and the snack bar. These are separate accounts. Jigger is the student store for buying snacks/clothing/textbooks/school supplies. Unfortunately the shop is outsourced and as a result everything is very expensive so I would buy as much school supplies as possible from other places. The snack bar is in the main dining hall and sells candy and cookies. Students use their IDs to buy things from these accounts. Many parents confuse the two accounts as a single account and end up putting several hundred dollars on the snack bar account… be careful! (The money does roll over from year to year though so I guess maybe a large snack bar sum could run out over 4 years)

laundry: The split is about 50/50 amongst the boys. I do not know about girls. I personally do my own. There are laundry machines in every house and they are run with quarters (75cents to wash, 50cents to dry)

How many kids are looked after by each dorm parent? Are there upper proctors in the freshmen dorms?

I think I understand your question but am not sure, I will use the terms I am familiar with from Lville.

It depends on the dorm for number of children looked over by a house master (dorm parent?). But I would say there is at most a 15:1 student to teacher ratio living IN THE DORMS. 15:1 is NOT the overall student to faculty ratio.

I do not know what you mean by upper proctors… but there are teachers who live in the dorm with the students and there will be a teacher on duty during study hall who will keep things quiet and such.

Thanks. I meant upperclassmen as proctors. Looks like the House Masters will look over the students during study hall.

How many restrooms typically are in one house? Are there keys for every dorm room or are all dorms unlocked and only one key is needed to open the front door of the dorm house? Is walking off campus permitted during free periods? Are there field trips/buses that you can take to visit different cities?

Invent - In the freshmen and sophomore/junior dorms there are also prefects. Prefects are Seniors who are chosen to live in an underclassman dorm instead of going to a senior dorm. They serve as role models and help out the house masters.

haha123 - there is one communal bathroom per floor and there is also a private bathroom on the first floor. Typically, the private bathroom is for female guests to the house. Ever dorm room has its own key. Yes you may leave campus, but you must have permission first (although I do not know where you could go during a free of only 55 min). The shops across the street are actually on land owned by Lville so they are considered on campus. There are field trips and buses on the long weekends. There is also a bus stop right in front of Lville that will take you into Princeton.

what kind of stores are there close to lawrenceville?

Across the street are maidenhead bagel co, TJs Pizza, Fedora’s (sit down restaurant), Purple cow (ice cream), and a barber. Princeton is 5 minutes up the road and there are a lot more things there (CVS, more restaurants, clothes) and then Route 1 (which is like the major shopping district for the area) is about 10 minutes away.
