Lawrenceville student here. I am happy to answer any questions.

I am a 3rd former (10th grader). I was new this year. If you have any questions, I am happy to answer them.

My son is in 7th grade and interested in Lawrenceville. It’s definitely a reach school for him. He has the SSAT score, but he’s a B student in a high-rated private school. (He’s struggled with organization and efficient ways of studying, but he’s now doing better.) He’s looking for a school that’s academically rigorous, but not super competitive. I think of Lawrenceville as being pretty competitive. What do you think?

I came from a very highly rated private school in the tri-state area. I was an honor role student but I had my struggles (i.e. Math). Like your son, I had great scores (95% overall but I think my math was low 80’s) I also have ADHD (for which I am medicated) and executive functioning is my true Achilles heel. I have found L’ville to be very competitive and challenging. I did make Dean’s list but I really did work for it. My best friend from day school goes to one of the Phillips Academies and we have had the discussion about competitiveness.I find the kids at L’ville to be competitive with themselves but ,with some exceptions, not with each other. I have helped kids with writing and I have had kids help me with math. My friend says her experience has been a bit different. She says the kids are ultra competitive with themselves, as well as with others. (I am not bashing another school, just reporting what I have been told first hand). I also want to qualify that I do not play sports competitively at L’ville , so I do not feel qualified to answer the question in light of athletics. I do think that the house system helps to encourage cooperation and deep friendships.
I love L’ville and have been very happy. I have been challenged and I have worked really hard. I definitely think your son should look at the school and not rule it out. He may find that like me it might be the right fit.
