My daughter wants to apply to Lawrenceville and after reading so much in these threads I am wondering what her chances really are for getting in? Like so many other students and parents who have posted, she is a straight A student (they don't give A+ at her school). She is involved in a lot of activities and is a particularly strong athlete. She is African American and will be testing soon. It took me a while to even let the idea of boarding schools enter my psyche - she is an only child and I will miss her terribly. Now I wonder if she may be getting set up for a big dissapointment?

Additionally, any reviews good or bad on Lawrenceville would be great!

I think she may apply to Andover as well. She already interviewed at Lawrenceville and she feels she did well - although she feels more confident about her Andover interview.

I am a novice at this stuff so I am not sure of Acronyms yet - EC's? URM?

Have you heard anything about Lawrenceville- other than the stadard stuff?

EC= extra curricular activities
URM = underrepresented minority e.g. African American, hispanic/latino, native american

Sorry for the confusion!

I am not really familiar with Lawrenceville although I know it has a good reputation. The description of your daughter would put her in the running at all the top tier schools. Applying to at least a few would help insure a landing spot next year.

Well part of it is what I want (I know is shouldn't be) but I don't want her to go to NE - it is too far away. She definately wants coed and she is very driven. She wants to be in an atmosphere that is challenging. Her middle school is one of the most challenging in the area and that is what she is used to. She thrives in an environment with high expectations. She loves to run - so Lawrenceville's Cross Country success is a real plus.

She doesn't want it to be a school totally void of fun - though.

The other school we are looking at is Episcopal in VA but she feels Lawrenceville would be a set up from that. I thought about The Hill School but I heard some mummerings that they were in a lower tier as well - although they are in the 10 school admissions.

If you read through this board, Lawrenceville tends to be put in with the top tier schools. Hill and Episcopal are considered second tier schools. Please don't let other people on a message board make these types of decisions for you. I understand your desire to get information and this board can be a resource, but you need to visit Episcopal and Hill for yourself. I know people who have attended both schools and wouldn't think of going to any other school, no matter how prestigious, if they had to do it all over again.

Has your daughter taken the SSAT exam? If so, how did she fare? One of your listed schools has had drug related issues. I won't comment on which school as this may have been corrected in the past two years and my info. was not first hand, but did come from multiple sources. The SSAT is important as some students with straight As from large city magnet/academic honors schools experience difficulty with the academic demands at the most elite boarding schools. Most are simply asked to repeat a grade, although some return to public school. Most recent case involved a student from a magnet/honors school in the Philadelphia area. This, however, may not be an issue at your intended schools. Schools such as Hotchkiss, Groton, Milton, St. Paul's, Andover & Exeter and Deerfield tend to be the most academically demanding. Hill, for example, would not be as challanging. Lawrenceville will be. Epicopal would be in between Hill and Lawrenceville. Mercersburg and Peddie are also possibilities in the Penna-NJ-DC region.

She is scheduled to take the ISEE soon and the SSAT next month (depending on her performance on the ISEE). Lawrenceville and Episcopal accept the ISEE as well.

She currently attends a pretty rigorous private middle school. She took the SAT for a gifted program last year and scored very well.

I would really like to hear what you heard about the drug issue. I realize that the information is second hand.

My daughter's best friend started in Lawrenceville 9/06 as a 9th grader. She's also African American and feels like she now goes to school in heaven. Much happier than when she was in the local private prep school here in Ft Lauderdale. She'll actually be sleeping over this Friday night, if you'd like to ask her any questions or have her talk to your daughter. She's an incredibly nice, warm and friendly person who immediately puts people at ease, so I'm sure your daughter would enjoy talking to her. PM me if we can help!
