LAX to UCLA and vice versa

i'm new to traveling by myself..
how do you get from LAX to UCLA? as in different ways and the cheapest ways
and from UCLA back to LAX?

since orientation check out time is 6 pm, will i have trouble getting to LAX for a 9:35pm flight? (i haven't booked it yet because i was so unsure)
thanks

same here...what orientation are you going to?

:/ i'm going to the last one...
ahhh i'm going to get random classes. i don't even really know which professors are good or what kind of classes to take yet. i need to do some research.

covered many times. search this forum for LAX.

hmm no one has replied to my second question, which is a major concern for me in booking ticket asap:
let's say i take the big blue bus, it takes an hour one way to LAX/UCLA? but will i make it in time for a flight at 9PM if orientation check out time is at 6PM, assuming between 6-6:45PM i can manage to get on the bus?

you'll most likely be able to make it, regardless of traffic. although the length of your trip will vary considerably depending on the day that youre leaving orientation. welcome to LA traffic hehe :)

if i take the big blue bus, does anyone know which line to take to LAX and where the bus stop is at UCLA?
i think i'm just stupid or something.. i've been looking at the bigbluebus.com and i can't figure it out..

There's a couple ways to get from UCLA to LAX (and vice versa)

1) The cheapest way is to take the bus. Big Blue Bus #3, or Culver City Bus #6 (green color). Both take the same amount of time to travel, waiting for the bus takes the same amount of time (10-15 minute wait usually), and both cost the same ($0.75; some might tell you it's $0.25 with BruinCard, but I believe that option is only available during the regular school year). I personally prefer Culver City instead of Big Blue because Culver City stops at Ackerman Turnaround, while Big Blue stops at Westwood/Weyburn (2 blocks from Ackerman Turnaround) or at Hilgard (which is on the far side of campus, 20-30 min walk to get to the dorms). However, I believe Big Blue stops at Ackerman Turnaround as well during the weekends and on weekdays after 10pm.

2) There's also the Metro bus, but it cost $1.25, so why bother? =P Plus, I don't know the bus number to take for that anyway.

3) There's shuttle vans. They cost from $10-20, depending on what part of the campus you want to be dropped off at. Reservations are usually made online if you want to get to LAX. If you're at LAX already, you can just walk up to one of the islands and tell the coordinator where you want to go. I rarely ride it because I'm cheap and I rather waste time than money. It's worth it if you have a lot of luggage or if you think the time saved is more valuable than the cost.

4) You can call a taxi or ask a friend to give you a ride to the airport if you got a friend who has a car.

As for the amount of time to get from UCLA to LAX, you're actually fine with time. From my experience, it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours (starting at UCLA dorms and ending at the gate, meaning pass the security screening). The longest for me was 3.5 hours, and that was because I had some very horrible traffic (road construction plus heavy rain), and there were a lot of people at the airport. I barely got on my flight that time, but it was a one time event, and I doubt it'll happen to you.

As for getting from LAX to UCLA via bus, you first have to go to one of the island designated parking lot/public transportation I believe (I don't remember what it's called. I usually just remember it as the one with the blue sign). Get on the one that says "Parking Lot C", although I heard that it also works with the one that says "Green Line Station" (I never tried that one). Just tell the driver that you want to get to the bus station and the driver will tell you when to get off (OR you can just sit in the airport-bus and wait until the airport-bus arrives at its last stop, which is the bus station. It's an additional 20-30 minute wait depending on how many people are on the airport-bus at the time). Once you're at the bus station, just wait for your bus. Make sure it says the destination is UCLA (I've seen many people make the mistake of getting on the bus that is going towards the airport and I usually end up seeing them on the bus again after the bus turned around and is making its next route).

From UCLA to LAX, just pay tell the bus driver you want to get off at LAX and the bus driver will let you know when to get off. You usually will get off at Parking Lot C, but some probably will tell you to get off at Green Line Station (final stop I believe, I never tried the Green Line Station route). From Parking Lot C, just look for the airport-bus to take you back to your terminal.

Have fun at orientation, and hope you don't get lost.

Oh, one more thing. If you take the Big Blue Bus, from LAX to UCLA, the bus stop is on Westwood/Le Conte (there's a Burger King as soon as you get off); if going from UCLA to LAX, the bus stop is on Westwood/Weyburn (one block down from Le Conte). Of course, you could catch the bus all the way down to the Hilgard stop (walking to the dorms is almost the same distance as if you get off at Westwood). Once again, I'm not 100% about the Big Blue Bus stopping at Ackerman turnaround. If you want to be safe, just catch the Culver City Bus.

thanks for great posts jon...im printing ur post and taking it with me when i head down on the 22..:-)
