Lead 2011!

What are the main things that the selection commitee are looking for in the application and what do you think would give me an edge?

I’m applying to SEI and was wondering if we’re required to complete the app online. And for the part that says provide any additional information, they only give a few lines on the paper application. How is it possible to expand on that with so little space?

I’m also curious about Asian applicants. Is it an automatic no if I’m Chinese? Or would my application just have to be extra stellar? I do actually have the stellar test scores that poster mentioned, though I’m not sure if (s)he was being serious?

I called the program yesterday and the woman I spoke to was really honest and informative. I asked most of these questions, sorry if I missed yours.

  1. This year they are trying to cutdown on reading for applications. They are testing how concisely you can explain yourself (thus the short lines). Any add’l attachments or awards will be thrown out of your file.
2)This is a minority program. There are few asians accepted (although they account for the greatest percentage of applicants)-- about one for every location. HOWEVER they are asian minorities ex. from Singapore, Philippines, Not Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Indian, Pakistan (Bummer for me =[ ). She said there’s always a possibility and her best advice is that you don’t present yourself stereotypically. They don’t want the asian student who just aces tests b/c unfortunately this is expected (This refutes Whartonitis’ idea about a 2400 getting you in… I thought it would too). They are tired of seeing varsity asian tennis athletes, website owners, etc.
1. The “early summer” dates vary and will be listed soon.
  2. I asked for any other advice if I wanted to do a business program and she said LBW at Wharton. It costs more but doesn’t lean towards any particular race.
  3. I asked if I could incorporate investments in the stock market as an EC/work-- it’s actually not an EC and shows that you are not economically disadvantaged so it’s best not to be added.

Sigh. Time for LBW

I called the office and verified all of Hockeyisahmazing’s info (I didn’t ask about listing investment as an EC though)… thanks for your post, really eye-opening and thorough
Its crazy that asians make up the largest percentage of applicants!

Are you still going to apply Hockeyisahmazing?

Wait, if Pakistanis are not considered Asian minorities, are Bangladeshis? Also, are you supposed to send in an SAT score, and what if you haven’t taken it yet?

I don’t want to discourage you, Virginiuh but Bangladesh is still on the Indian subcontinent and was called “East Pakistan” until the 70’s. Whether a different language deems it to be a minority, I honestly don’t know for sure but I would doubt it. Good luck!

@Whartonitis I’m not applying… the program is just trying to make money by telling asians that there’s a possibility and I’m not buying into it… come on, no more than one asian participant per location?! hundreds of brilliant students for just a handful of spots

On the app, it says to provide an article about a controversial business decision. Is the app telling the applicant to a) attach an article written by a site, magazine, etc, or b) write an original article?

Thanks in advance!

Attach an article. The purpose is to see how well informed you are on current events
