It's been a while that I've been on this side of CC, but I just wanted to say that LEAD applications are out! Whether you want to do LEAD Business (current 11th graders), LEAD Engineering (current 10th or 11th graders), or LEAD Global (current 9th & 10th graders only), go to LEAD Program and go to the designated program you want to apply to!

Any questions you should go to the LEAD threads (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/900280-lead-sbi-2010-a.html or http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/292506-lead-summer-business-institute.html) or ask anyone you know of whose done the program you want to do before (I did LEAD Summer Business Institute at Kellogg this past summer)

Good luck on your endeavors!

Hey sandra_ny2011! Thx for posting this, wow their application is really really early…I’ve been wanting to apply for a while…but I saw this description on the U of M’s site for summer programs:
U-M School of Business - Business LEAD
LEAD selects promising 11th grade African American, Hispanic American, and Native American high school students to participate in comprehensive summer institutes at graduate business schools

[Summer Programs | University of Michigan](http://www.umich.edu/summer_prog.php#Anchor-child)

yeah…and Im not exactly any of those races…soooo…do I even have a chance?
Im 100% Asian btw…so I think my chances just got lowered by 99%…

I was reading the LEAD application and it said that they will notify acceptances by late February. However, I am also applying to other summer programs such as MITES, YESS, etc. I know that they give decisions a bit later than that. Does anyone know how LEAD handles applicants who’ve applied to other programs?

If I were to make it into LEAD, could I prolong my time for confirming my participation until the decisions arrive from MITES?

I got into both LEAD Programs (Engineering at Berkeley and Business at Stanford). I found out about Engineering in I think February, but the wanted a deposit before mid-March. I went ahead and paid it and held out for MITES, assuming that they wouldn’t be pleased to hear I was waiting on a competitor program. I found out about Business right before I found out about MITES and had about a week to confirm. When I got into MITES, I simply declined Business and dropped my spot from Engineering.

I hope that kind of helps. They might be lenient, but MITES probably takes away a few of their prospective students. One of my friends from MITES also got into to LEAD at Berkeley and then dropped his spot when MITES accepted him.

jbrown93,

This is all speculating I’ll get into LEAD, which is of course only a possibility. But, was the deposit expensive? LEAD engineering app says $1000 and I know my family can’t afford to pay that if I’m not attending the program? However, I would really like to get into MITES.

The deposit was either 50 or 100. I’m thinking 100. It was going to reject it, because my mom said she wasn’t going to pay the deposit just for me to not go, but my dad offered to pay the deposit so I could have a spot somewhere this summer.

thanks, that makes me feel better. id rather pay 100 than 1000, that is…if i’m even in that situation :)

Hey guys, I am super excited to be applying this year!! It says that they require two essays the business one and another that explains a leadership experience. The application says it may be up to 500 words does a previous alumni know if it can be more than 500?

How did you all answer to “Is there anything else you would like us to consider when reviewing your application?”

Should I expand on my activities, talk about why I’d like to go, tell them my complete life story, etc? It was a pretty vague question!

I was the only Asian LEADer at mine (W’09).

So basically, Asian=no chance?
This sucks :(

Asians—Basically, unless you have a 2400 SAT or something that really sets you apart don’t waste your time applying to LEAD… go for LBW

It is still prestigious but doesn’t discern based on race. Plus it’s on Penn’s campus!

if i’m applying, is there a certain university you designate for the SEI? i would be interested in attending it at villanova

Well regarding essays I would try to get it close to 500, but if your essays are over 500 I would not have it more that 520, 530 tops. My leadership essay was like 525 and my business essay was like 505. Also, you should not be discouraged if you are Asian and want to apply to LEAD, you would not be “wasting your time”. I saw pics and there was an Asian girl at Wharton this year, and there are underrrepresented Asians as well. Either way, all LEADers chosen will have something that sets them apart from the rest of the applicants, not just Asians. Oh, and in the “Is there anything else you would like us to consider when reviewing your application?” part, I expanded upon why I wanted to go to LEAD and gave my top 5 choices of SBIs.

Yeah, how do they choose which students go where.
Do they try to put students in colleges close to their home.

@Facedownclap: The people reading applications at LEAD try to have SBIs with geographic diversity like in my LEAD (I went to Northwestern in Illinois and I’m from nyc), a lot of the people came from nyc, new mexico, texas, and florida. There were like 2 people from Illinois though, so they like to have a good mix of people.

So then for the SEI program, it’s just random where you go? Also, does the $1,000 cost include housing too?

also, are Caucasians at a distinct disadvantage in application? I was hoping to apply and feel I am very qualified but I won’t waste my time if they rarely accept white students

@bigpapi3434: LEAD places students in SEIs and SBIs in part to have geographic diversity as I mentioned before, so if you have a certain selection of SEIs you are considering, I would check whichever time preference suits you best, then in the additional information section have a list of your top SEIs. Housing is included in the tuition fee (if the $1000 amount is the tuition). Also are you fully Caucasian? I ask because someone I did LEAD with was half Caucasian, the other half was Native American however.

Yes I am 100% Caucasian. Do you think that would exclude me from being admitted to the program for the most part?
