<p>I have been told that doing summer high school programs is especially helpful in this competitve college application environment. The summer programs I am talking about are scholarship based where the applicant pays nothing or very little for attending the program after a competitive selection process. Examples are Telluride; LEAD Summer Business Institute; Cosmos; Foundation for Economic Leaders etc. More listings about such summer programs can be found at forum on CC. <p>It is a two part program. The first level is targeted at current 8th grades. They can study at Stanford or Michigan. The second level is targeted at current 9th and 10th graders. They can study at Virginia or Berkely. It does not look like you have to be in both levels. The majority of costs are picked up by LEAD but there are parent contributions. I do know that LEAD does give finanical aid for those portions. Selection is not based on current economic status. The deadline to apply is May 2 so I wanted to make sure everyone in this forum is aware of this new opportunity.</p>
<p>LEAD is a wonderful organization. Upon completion of a LEAD program you become a LEAD alumni and are invited to many wonderful opportunities. </p>

I will definitely have to check into these for my younger S who is in currently in the 9th grade. He is much more math/science oriented than my older S. We’ve just now started looking around for a good summer program for my younger S. Glad it isn’t too late to apply.</p>

<p>Tejana13. It looks like you and I will be around much longer since I too have a 9th grader interested in Science. It has been my experience that most scholarship summer programs have applications deadlines falling between Dec and Feb. I posted this one since the deadline is May and they just announced it and it is targeted to the younger ages. Lead is wonderful and if your son can get into this program it would be great. My DD already has summer plans (she is going to Australie with People to People (while I’ll be eating beans the rest of the summer to pay for it) and she is in a girls only oriented science 4 year program here in San Diego called BEWISE ([BE</a> WiSE — San Diego Science Alliance](<a href=“http://sdsa.org/programs/be-wise/programs/be-wise/be%20wise]BE”>http://sdsa.org/programs/be-wise/programs/be-wise/be%20wise)) She has applied to attend a computer programing bootcamp at UCSD through Bewise which she hopes to find out this week if she is accepted. Bewise is wonderful like LEAD in that it is either free or a discount. My DD hopes to apply next year to LEAD’s engineering program. </p>
<p>Check out the listings on the two threads in college confidenital and start making a list for your son. MiTES; Cosmo; Clark: Lead etc are just some of the science math summer programs out there.</p>
<p>@itsv Thanks again for the information. I’m so glad to have a starting point because I was feeling terrible about focusing so much time this year on my oldest S college application process. Research for my younger S extracurricular (for the summer) went on the back burner for most of the year. I’ve just started looking into to some of the programs and they look GREAT!</p>
