Hey guys, this thread is for the people that are applying to LEAD. Which part of LEAD are you applying to? If you have any questions, it can be answered. If you are an alumni, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! I’m applying, too. I want to do the business program at UPenn… anyone else applying to that?

My daughter would be interested in applying to the program at Dartmouth but it still says that the dates at Dartmouth at TBD. what is up with that?

Do you guys know if this program is directed at URM’s?

ConfusedMom… I called about the Dartmouth thing, and they just said that the dates have just not been set for that location yet. I’m not sure why!

I’m applying to the business program

Hi Everyone! @hawkace @anewcrown

I went to LEAD Wharton last summer (it’s crazy to call myself an alumna bc it literally feels like it was yesterday). So excited to see your interest in attending; you will never regret it.

Best of luck to y’all <3

^ Just curious. How much of an impact does LEAD have on your admission into Upenn?

@calmartin There are a lot of factors to consider when answering that question…

First, a large percentage of the students that even get into the Wharton program are already SUPER SMART AND ACCOMPLISHED lol, as in they’d probably get into Penn without the program. So far, of the 7 students that applied ED to Penn, 6 were accepted: 2 Hunstman, 3 Wharton, and 1 CAS. Another 6 of the 30 LEADers that applied ED to other schools were accepted to various Ivys and prestigious schools.

Second, I would say the real benefit comes from truly experiencing the campus and ultimately falling in love with Penn. A month of experiences and memories make for crazy interesting interviews and “Why Penn” essays. I’m sure the admissions officers can appreciate our applications, bc we can personally attest to our love to attend; we standout.

Third, We did have complimentary interviews on campus and several seminars/class by Wharton professors. This can be of benefit if you keep in touch with those contacts. I don’t want to say we have an advantage by attending LEAD, but I think the program’s competitive nature and reputation most definitely doesn’t hurt :)

I hope that helped!

@lydiamanglin, is the program very oriented at URM’s? There seems to be no chance of being accepted if I’m in ORM considering that everybody in the photo album is URM.

@hawkace For the most part, yes LEAD is directed towards URMs… But, I wouldn’t completely lose hope. I was quite surprised when I arrived how they defined considered URM. In my quad, I had 2 white roommates (not trying to be controversial) that were half Hispanic, so they were considered to be URM. The diversity at Penn verses the other SBI locations I heard was greater. Additionally, Black doesn’t just mean AA, but African, mixed, Caribbean, etc.

If you feel your ethnicity would really hinder you in being accepted, apply to the program: Lead The Business World!! Their program was going on at the same time as ours and I heard that the experience was quite similar, but that’s all I know about it. Oh, and it was NOT directed towards URMs.

@lydiamanglin Yes! Thank you for bringing up LBW. Did you share classes or interact with those students? I also noticed both summer programs share the same dates.

@anewcrown No problem! We kind of interacted with LBW, but not on a scheduled or regimented basis. We’d run into each in the dining halls or when walking around campus. The campus is so open that you have many opportunities to associate with a variety of different people and programs. If I remember correctly, there was at least 15-20 other programs going on while we were there- some were only for a day and some were for weeks.

@lydiamanglin Thanks for answering questions! Hopefully if i get in, I’ll contact you about some more questions.

Wow guys, the due date came around! I was wondering how much job experience you all put down?

LEAD’s website says that the deadline has been moved to February 12. Does that mean that everything is due on that date? The forms still say February 5. Also, I’m Asian and I know that Asians normally don’t count as URM… to those of you who attended LEAD last year, how many Asians were there?

@teragram I’d recommend that you still try to get all of your paperwork in ASAP, regardless of the new deadline.

Additionally, when I attended last year at LEAD Wharton, we had no Asians. But, LBW had like 6 or 7…

Maybe it varies by location/ LEAD program type?

@lydiamanglin Thanks! I’m applying to LBW so hopefully I’ll go there. Do you know if LBW and LEAD have similar/different activities?

@teragram LEAD SBI varies by its host location, so that’s difficult to answer.

But as far as Wharton goes, I heard many of the LBW on-campus activities are similar to LEAD’s bc they are headed by the same lady (she’s like Penn’s Summer Activities Chair or something).

What made LEAD Wharton special was that we also traveled to NYC and DC for corporate trips and overnight stays… I think LBW stays locally most of the time, but I heard they do more corporate activities in downtown Philly and surrounding areas. Don’t quote me on it, as I’m no expert about LBW lol.

@lydiamanglin Ok thx!
