Leadership Award - please help ASAP!

Hi, I had a quick questions about the essays for the UCB leadership award. Can I use the same essays from either the UC app or the UCLA scholarship essays - do the same people review the admissions and scholarship essays?!

You can recycle essays. I wouldn't say the same people review both admissions and scholarship essays, but a few may overlap. But it's pretty safe. I did it for both Berkeley and UCLA and it worked (:

From what I understand, the Leadership Award app is read by people associated with the California Alumni Association, who may or may not be affiliated with the people that read your main app. However, at the bottom of the Leadership Award page, it says that by submitting your app, you're willing to release info from your UC application. Doesn't say whether or not they'll read the essays from both.

I'd say don't do it. If you got the e-mail invite like I did, they must know you were a leader in some organization and, presuming they aren't spying on anyone, that means they must have gotten that info from your main app. Meaning they have access to the essays you wrote before.

I'd say don't recycle.

I read somewhere on these forums that the email was sent to everyone above a certain GPA, regardless of what they put for EC's.

But I'd still agree with Locke and say to not use the same essays; tailor these to delve deeper into leadership potential because that's what the evaluators are looking for.

Doc, make sure you take everything on here with a grain of salt, it is the internet after all.

Like I said before, it's probably best not to recycle. I know I'm a much better writer now that I have done numerous essays for scholarships and other colleges.

I should clarify myself. I didn't realize that we're talking specifically about recycling UC essays. I didn't do that myself and I don't encourage people to. I did, however, use essays that I wrote to other schools. But like Locke said, writing a fresh essay is best.

kchen: Ahh, my bad. Ya, I did that too early on.

thanks for your help!! and i did end up using my other essay haha. I wrote an essay for this but then realized my UC essay works too (I liked that one better). So I was having a bit of a dilemma but it's all good now :]

good luck to everyone applying!

Per an alumni scholar office worker:

yes you can use the same essays--no the same people don't read them. The
applications are read and scored by Alumni.

Is it okay if one of my 150 word responses is 166 words!??? =/

They won't count the words. As long as it fits within the character limit in form, its pretty safe to assume you'll be fine.

lol thanks for the reassurance. I'm just panicking because it's getting so close to the deadline.

after i submitted it it said "your info has been rec'd! if not redirected in 10 sec, click here" and then it redirected me to the application.. i had the page open a long time, does this mean i did not submit my info.. or did i? =O

You submitted it. Now you have a 3 business day wait for a conformation e-mail. If you don't get one in 3 days, e-mail them about it.

okay. if this doesnt work, im blaming you. just kidding! but I really do hope it went through

mine did the same thing - and i actually got an e-mail confirmation right away, so you should be fine. and the waiting game begins :]

gilmore: It began Dec. 1.

lol - well that's the ultimate waiting game. idk how everyone doesn't pull out all their hair by the end of the year.
