I'm not a leader...

You know how colleges always look for leadership? Well, is it ok if I'm not a leading type? Do many colleges seriously look at your leadership accomplishment? I'm in a bunch of things but I like being a supporting guy.

I really hate it how summer programs, colleges, and interviewers always ask you about your leadership. I prefer sitting at a lab bench or working with with a group of people.

I really had no leadership to speak of either, aside from being 1st French Horn in band for one year. It’s not a necessity as long as you have the other things you need on your application

Unless you want to go to a really good school, don’t worry about it. State schools and other large schools probably won’t even look at that, but prestigious ones will pay attention to the little details.

The Ivies are looking for students who will become the leaders of their fields … take that as you will.

I’m not a leader. I think it worked out fine for me.

Am I the only one who thinks this leader thing is sort of stupid? And not being a leader doesn’t automatically make you a follower or less important…I just don’t get the EXTREME emphasis placed on it.

definetely dont buy into this leadership ********. Why the hell does it matter if you can run NHS or some stupid ass club. Most, if not everyone, could if they wanted to. Its not like its an indication that youll running P&G in the future.

And that is perfectly fine! Since I’m not that much of a leader myself, I actually asked an admission officer at a very selective school this exact question once. What he said then was, “we need supporters who can work in a team as well as leaders”, or something to that extent, which I remember to this day because it made me extremely happy for an entire night. Anyway, I think there’s more to being a leader than being the president of some club or delegating tasks to others; it’s also about being good at what you do and being the main contributor in the field in which you’re most interested. It’s about being a motivation to others and having the initiative to tackle and to motivate others to tackle what has never been attempted before. It’s about so many other things.

On the other hand, you should definitely try to be the “leader” for just once in whatever activity you’re most involved with when the opportunity comes. Haha, I love what Albus Dumbledore said in the Deathly Hallows once and I think it may apply to you: “It is a curious thing, but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Those who have leadership thrust upon them, and take up the mantle because they must, and find to their surprise that they wear it well.”

^wow, how can I miss an important quote in the Harry Potter book?

In my opinion, a person becomes a leader when the circumstances call for one. So, being a leader is pretty much situational.

^Agreed. And as my old soccer coach used to say, there are those who lead by example.
