So tommorow is my first summer course of Alg II. This is the first year the school is doing it, and its restricted to about 25 rising sophomores. The question I have about it is: We only have 38 hours of classroom instruction. Idk how much work will be assigned for home, but is that 38 hours enough. I did well in Geometry this year (I had the highest test scores on every test, and had one of the highest overall class grades in school, and I can't say I put any effort at all.) Obviously I'm willing to put effort into Alg II since its such a short amount of time, but from the view of someone who's taken Alg II, will this be enough time? Will I be adequately prepared to get an A in precalculus?

I sucked at Algebra II, but Geometry and Algebra II are completely different. Just because you landed highest scores in geometry doesn’t mean you’ll do that in Algebra II. I’m guessing things will be face paced and to succeed, all you have to do is keep up. There isn’t a lot of material to cover but in my school we started from basic algebraic equations/functions and graphing to Logarithms. You seem like a math person to me, but I think you can handle it.

I just finished precalculus this year with a B (should have been an A but I bombed my final), and I took algebra 2 in the 8th grade. The way they did it in my school, algebra 2 was basically the first half of precalc and trigonometry was the second half. So, it would be hard to judge if you would get an A with just 38 hours. Like you, I didn’t put it any effort in geometry and I aced the class, but geometry has basically nothing to do with algebra or precalc. But, in my opinion, you should probably put more than 38 hours in if you want to be successful in the algebra aspect of precalc (trig is another story).

Best of luck too you from a fellow math nerd !!

If you took algebra (I assume you did) and did well in there, then you’ll probably do fine in the summer course. You appear to display some aptitude for math, so as long as you put in a bit of effort there shouldn’t be a problem. Really, 38 hours is more than enough if you add in the hours of homework/studying. Also, precalc is much like alg2 so no worries there…

Yeah Harvey, I did well in Alg 1 in comparison to rest of the class. Everyone agrees that the Alg 1 teacher was terrible. I put in more effort than in geometry- I did all the classwork and homework, but never studied. I averaged around an A-. The teacher that’s doing our summer Alg II was my geometry teacher and she is one of my favorite teachers so I think all will be good.

I took alg 2 over the summer…it was the worst 20 days of my life. However, the class was a joke…Just pay attention in class and do the least amount of work possible at home, you should be fine if you did good in alg 1
