I took Algebra I in 8th grade and made C's throughout it. I took Geometry this year and I am doing pretty good at it (A's). Next year, I will have to take Algebra II and I need some advice on what I can do to hopefully achieve an A in there. Is there usually review of Algebra I? Do I need to review by myself over the summer? And if so, how? Is Algebra II hard conceptually? Do any of you have some suggestions based on your Algebra I/II experience?

It depends on the class/teacher. In my honors Algebra II class last year there was no review, we jumped right in. It would have been very hard to have done well if you did not have a strong foundation in Algebra I. You should review a bit over the summer if you have time. Khan Academy is always a good option!

They’re all easy classes, you’re just not used to studying enough for it. Study 30 hours for the tests and I guarantee you’ll get A’s on them. Back when I took it I only studied about 3 hours per test and that was enough, so 30 hours should be plenty.

Also, it depends why you got a C in algebra 1 - were you not doing your homework which dropped you down? Were you getting Fs and Ds on the tests but As on your homework bumped you up to a C? How hard were you working? Did you study much?

It really does depend on your teacher. In my class, we didn’t really review much of the Alg 1 stuff but we took a test on it, which most people did have to retake. It really is normal to forget a lot of Alg 1 concepts, so if you’re going to review anything over the summer, review them. Algebra 2 is not very difficult conceptually. My biggest recommendation is to not think too far into it. Studying is a huge necessity in Alg 2. I could get away with not studying for tests in Geometry, but Alg 2 is very challenging only if you don’t study. Doing tons of practice problems really helps. Overall, just make sure you have a strong Alg 1 base and be prepared to study extensively. Good luck!
