I am currently not in the best health, and might have to go to surgery. That would require me to miss at least a week of school and a month of rehab. It will be a struggle to keep up academically if that is the case. I am currently attending a SUNY school and I wanted to transfer to more prestigious SUNY school for my second year. The first semester I did well, 3.9. But i mostly took courses to fulfill my general education requirements; so no upper division courses. I was just wondering if taking a leave of absence will put me at a disadvantage or even keep me from applying to transfer.

I think that if you feel that this would be the best option for you, you should do it. I don’t know how your parents would feel about it. My parents were very supportive. Your parents might actually feel sympathetic and go along with you so. I personally decided to take a leave of absence because I had to deal with a medical condition and and depression and anxiety came along. So my academic performance was declining as a result. I took this leave at the end of April last year and let me tell you something. Best choice I ever made! At the time I was kind of upset that I had to leave but i realized that it was the best thing. I went home focused on getting better and now I am actually back at the same school this spring semester. The thing is taking a leave, even though it may seem like a bad thing or like you won’t go back to the same school or whatever, it can actually help you get focused on what you want to do when you go back. You will perform better if you feel good. I’m back at school now and guess what? My grades are looking so good right now. I have been making a lot of 95s and 91s on things. I have made a few lower grades, but overall everything is so much better. So don’t necessarily look at taking the leave, if needed, as a bad thing. It’s just temporary and you may actually decide that you like your school a lot and that you want to go back to the same school after your semester leave instead of transferring. The thing is, you just have to be determined to go back and trust me, when you are determined and you get all the help you need, you will go back. Maybe you just want to rest and get your body where you want it to be for now. You might decide to work a little while and think about what career options you want to pursue while your at home. I hope this helps! Good luck!
