Leda Scholars Application: 2016-2017

@Ahmeda14960
I have the same questions as @Hamlon. The one additional question that I do have is what does LEDA do besides the 7 week summer program? Online it said that it was is a 6 year program and I wanted to know what the rest of the 6 years looks like.

@aspiringgirl thanks! How far back did you guys go back for the awards section on the application?

You definitely shouldn’t go back past 9th grade. @athena11

@Hamlon Here is the description a Cohort 11 scholar (@happyslappy) gave last year when I was applying.

"@Ahmeda14960 Rule one: LEDA is not a summer camp. It is not easy, but it is sooooooo fun. It is comprised of the following components: College Guidance (CG), Aspects of Leadership (AOL), Residential Life (RL), and College Writng Instruction (CW). Twice a week you meet with your CG counselor. You develop a plan for college, and you choose 8-12 schools to apply to. There is also a CG class twice a week where we do things like going through the Common App, discussing tricky points in FAFSA, practicing for college interviews, etc. Once a week we visit nearby schools, we went to Yale, UPenn, Swarthmore, Wesleyan, and Columbia, to name a few. College admissions officers from around the country come to visit us also (Stanford, Harvard, Oberlin, etc). AOL is kind of like a college discussion class. We read about social and political issues, and we come to class and discuss them. It’s so cool since everyone is from all over and we have fun challenging each other’s opinions. RL’s purpose is to get us used to college social life. We stay in a dorm and we have a roommate. Our counsellors arrange fun activities like lip sync battles, foosball tournaments, and movie nights so that we can bond and relax. We work hard and we surely play hard also. When class is over for the day we go to Nassau Street and experience the local culture. RL is all about bringing the cohort together and giving them an experience similar to college life. CW is great too. Each class is about 14 people, and we get awesome writing professors from places like Columbia and Yale. We also have intensive ACT prep. We have class twice a week, and we take the ACT or SAT every Saturday. I left a lot out, but these are the basics. "

My year was the first year that we did not visit Yale and Wesleyan, and we also took standardized tests less than Cohort 11 did (about four or five times), but other than that this is what you should expect.

I will say that after LEDA when you’re applying to college, your writing instructor continues to help you with your college essays.

As for your last question I’m not totally sure what you mean, but I can tell you from personal experience LEDA will probably be different than you expect. I went in thinking that test prep would be the most important class ( it wasn’t) and that I was there to ONLY study. You will have a lot of work, but trust me when I say you’ll remember much more than the workload.

@CIRCUITDEBATER after you get into a college, LEDA has a support system in place to help with the transition to college, as it can be tough for low-income and first-generation students. LEDA can also give you advice on graduate schools and graduate programs through a counselor once that becomes a topic of interest. I can’t tell you what any of it is like, because I’m still a high school senior, but you can be sure that LEDA will support you throughout college.

Has anyone completed their application? If so did you get an email confirmation?

I have not completed my application yet. This is mainly because I am unable to get my teacher and counselor a link via email to submit their information. Has anyone else struggled with getting these links to teachers?

@univbound101 Yeah, I wrote in my counselor’s info and she wasn’t aware of any email. Do we need to submit the app first?

@Hamlon you need to email LEDA ASAP so they can resend the email to your counselor. If they still do not find/ receive a link, then LEDA will then give you instructions on what to do. Turning in your application will not help your counselor get the link faster, but your application will be incomplete if you do not get your academic information turned in. Lost story short, communicate with LEDA to get your issue resolved.

My APWH teacher said that she submitted my LEDA Application; should I have received some sort of confirmation?

My teacher/counselor also haven’t gotten emails. I emailed recruitment@ledascholars.org but haven’t gotten a response besides the automatic one. Make sure to include your teachers name and email in your email to them!

@CIRCUITDEBATER You should not receive confirmation of your teacher’s submissions; that is why LEDA recommends that you check with those submitting information for you to make sure you have all resources in to LEDA before the deadline.

@brilliantbachu I have emailed LEDA every day and have received my responses. If my teachers have not received the links, I will be calling LEDA today.

@univbound101 I emailed them a couple of days ago and still haven’t gotten a response. Did you mean you haven’t either? Let me know what happens if you do call!

@brilliantbachu I called them today and got my email situation figured out, but today LEDA sent out a mass email about the technical issues they’ve been having. They said that people should keep contacting them if they are still having problems with the application. Good luck; you should contact them ASAP.

If any of you guys need essay corrections, you can reach out to me, as I am already correcting essays for LEDA applicants; and as states with @univbound101 contact LEDA asap if you are having difficulties. Iris is super nice and she will be more than glad to help you out

I’m freaking out!!! I have to rewrite essay #1 again.

I contacted Iris and it got sorted out! I’m sort of nervous but trying to stop obsessing so much! Anyone else only able to put 5 activities? also my awards section is pretty lackluster…?

It only allowed me to put 6 @brilliantbachu

What happened @aspiringgirl ? Did you use google docs or word? if so, its recoverable. you can pm if you need specific help

My counselor could not submit the academic information; it showed an error message Did anyone else have an issue like this?
