legacies?

My Dad graduated from UDel in 1982 and I applied and I am anxiously awaiting the decision. I was just wondering if being a legacy impacts your admission decision a lot? Will it help me significantly? Just curious.

I’m not sure about UD specifically, but at many colleges legacy gives a slight advantage to your application, although not an overwhelming one.

legacy status is a factor that is “considered” but is not “important” to the decision process. Therefore, it is a positive factor but not a very strong one. See the U Del common data set linked here http://www.udel.edu/IR/cds/cds1112.pdf

OOS applicants at UD generally fall into three categories. The first group include applicants who clearly exceed UD’s admission standards (and are accepted). A second group do not meet minimum admission standards (and are rejected). The third group (probably the largest) includes applicants who meet standards for admission but UD does not have enough slots to admit them all. Being a legacy probably would have no effect if you fall into the first two groups. If you fall into the third group I suspect being a legacy might elevate your position in this group to a degree and, depending on the competition, might give you a slight advantage. Best of luck to you.
