Lehigh Class of 2017!

Yes, it's time... Lets start a thread for all Lehigh 2017 hopefuls!

I'm applying as a BioE major. Anyone else?

This thread’s title is misleading, haha. At first I thought you were posting about an acceptance or something but it’s way too early for that.

I’m applying for the same major as you!

Are you doing ED? Judging by your username you seem pretty enthusiastic about Lehigh.

Sorry about the title! I just used the same title as last years! And yes, I’m applying ED, so maybe we can both be Yankees-fanatic-BioE’s at Lehigh!

I’m applying as a mechanical engineering major, although I’ve seriously considered BioE due to my love of biology.

I’m applying as a Biology Major!

Possible mechanical engineering major / IBE hopeful :)

Go Lehigh!
I’m applying early decision I for bioengineering.
:)

3 out of 6 of us are for bioengineering… Now I’m worried :P

And 2 out of 6 for mechanical engineering. Although I’m not entirely sure if I’m gonna stick with mechanical engineering. May end up going into biology instead. I think I still have some time to decide.

BioE is so popular. There are 7 people from my high school who have either applied or are applying ED to Lehigh and 5 of them are going BioE… :(

I’ve heard some ED1 applicants were able to find an acceptance statement on the Lehigh website. They typed in Admitted Students 2017 and were congratulated on their acceptance! Is this an error by the admissions department?

Is this what you’re referring to, WaitingDad?

[Lehigh University: Undergraduate Admissions: Events & Visiting: Admitted Students: Lehigh Life Days](http://www4.lehigh.edu/admissions/undergrad/admitted/lifedays.aspx)

If so, this is definitely not an acceptance notification. This is just an invite the to the Lehigh Life Days in Spring 2013, typically reserved for prospective admitted students to experience life on campus. I’ll agree that this is certainly a badly worded description.

False alarm. ED notifcations will come in the mail, or possibly by checking online through the Lehigh portal, as well.

Best,

Two weeks! They are going to go by SO slowly…

This will be a very long 2 weeks for ED applicants. This will be one of the toughest years to gain admittance because of diversity (students of color and geographic), Legacy, Sibling applicants and the new sports scholarships. Applying ED does give one a leg up as Lehigh does not want to be known as the IVY safety school. The most important way to increase your odds of gaining admitance especially if you’re caucasian from the NY or NJ area with no Legacy or Sibling backround is to VISIT, VISIT and VISIT again. Good luck to all!

Son applied ED…Chem E…I agree, the wait is long!!! Cannot wait to hear!

SO many engineering majors! It will be nice to be surrounded by people of similar interests, assuming I get in. 13 more days…

WaitingDad, thanks for making me feel better about my chances! Not only am I a caucasian from NJ but I am male, applying to engineering, and have no legacy status whatsoever! Quintuple jeopardy?

I’ll be the odd one out - I applied as a Business Major (Economics/Accounting or Finance/Accounting).

Haha, because of WaitingDad I feel more hopeful because I’m Indian.

I have a countdown clock on my phone - 11 days and 20 hours left!

Some observations. Lehigh has lately been much more favorable to female engineers ever since President Gast took over. ED has always been a huge aid in gaining an acceptance… if the grades and visiting are there. With a class size of ~1200+ (650 male and 550 female) about 1/2 of the class can be from the ED pool. Throw in about 15% Legacy and it is easy to see that it is not just hard to gain acceptance, it is extremely hard. There has been more applicants this year partly due to what many consider to be the national exposure from the Lehigh-Duke basketball game. The school also claims to be “need-blind” but 50% of students every year pay the full ride and thus have an ED edge. Lehigh wants the % of accepted students that “matriculate” to rise every year while keeping test scores high. Check out the “Lehigh 2010 LipDub” video and you’ll see why Lehigh is so popular. Lehigh also has one of the highest rate of sibling attendees in the whole country…which only occurs if a great school experience exists. I know…one son was class of '10 and the other is there now '13. My last one is going ED this year. If not accepted ED one needs to go VISIT a few more times and let admissions know Lehigh is where you want to go.

WaitingDad,

Last years class, as you said, was just about half from ED (46%) and about 1/5 are legacies (18%). It is quite crazy that that many people are SURE (for the most part) that they want to attend. It really makes me believe that getting accepted RD is as difficult as you say it is (the RD acceptance rate was 29% last year - including legacies). Then again, it is difficult to get into Lehigh through ED, too!

I find it SHOCKING that 50% of students pay “full-boat.” I mean, the people who don’t receive any aid tend to be AT LEAST in the top 5%, so to speak. Does this mean that about 50% of Lehigh students are in the top 5%?

And what are your sons’ majors (and prospective major)?

According to info on collegedata.com for 2010-2011, 68.6% of freshmen received aid/scholarships with LU meeting 96% of full need met. For that same year for all undergrads, the figure was 59.2% receiving aid, again with 96% of full need met. So, while the LU student body may be more affluent than at some schools, it is not a 50/50 split.

As a parent of a recent grad, an alum and a legacy, I think it is very telling that Lehigh graduates continue to choose to send their daughters and sons to their alma mater, and that those sons and daughters make LU their first choice in such strong numbers each year!
