I secured an internship at Lockheed Martin for computer science for the summer and they gave me four start dates to choose from: May 12, May 19, June 2, or June 9.

I recently had a flare up from tendonitis in my wrist and I want to rest it for awhile before I start the internship because I want no permanent issues arising from it. In addition, I need to find a new house where Im currently living for next semester and a place to rent near Lockheed. For these reasons, I am thinking of starting June 2nd. However, I will only be working there till around mid August before I go back to school.

My question is is this: How much will it really matter to future employers if I work at this internship from June 2nd-August 11 as opposed to May 19-August 11? Does the 2 weeks really matter? It sounds like an entire month if you really think, hmmmm May, june, july, august as opposed to just june, july, august. LOL. Please give me your opinions and thanks!

I think it is okay for the reasons you stated to take the slightly shorter internship. Honestly, your resume will probably say ‘May - August’ or ‘June - August’ on it without the specific dates. But if I were hiring, I would not find that difference of any significance (I might notice only 2 months, though). More important is how you described your responsibilities from that internship than the length.

Your absolutely right, it WILL say ‘May - August’ or ‘June - August’. I didnt think about that. Ehh, 1 month really wont make a difference at all to employers I’m thinking. It looks like the difference between 3 and 4 months, which is insignificant I think.

What you do during you internship is going to be more important than how long your internship is, especially if it’s only the difference of a month.

I would worry more about your health than what 2 weeks might do for you. I wouldn’t think much about seeing June - August instead of May - August on a resume.
