What is the usual summer internship length? 3 months? And when do companies usually want interns to start and end for summer internships? I'm an Advertising/Public Relations student that really wants to get an internship this summer, however I just found out I'll be traveling for a month with my family from June 28-July 26. Is this going to be a problem?

I don’t know what specific firms policies are on this sort of thing but summer internships typically last 10 weeks and I don’t think they will want to bring you on if you’re going to be gone for 4 of those weeks. Look for something more informal that’s probably a better option right now.

It varies, but it’s usually at least 10 weeks.

Again, it varies. Many companies (particularly larger ones) try to start their interns together to create a cohort experience. In that case, there’s probably a group that starts in May, one in early June, and one in late June depending on when their target schools end the Spring semester.

You’re going to cut into any potential internship, so yes it will probably be a problem. I would consider not going on the trip.

You will almost definitely be excluded from consideration of any serious internships if you will be gone for a full month, especially a month right in the middle of summer. That said, a month long trip could create a phenomenal lifelong memory, which is, to me, more important than a little resume bolstering.

For the most part, NY internships in adv/public relations run 10 weeks…paid and unpaid ( the latter due to the number of hours required by most universities for credit consideration)

Last two years, most started the first couple of weeks in June and lasted until first or second week of August accounting for 10…

If students want to travel, they usually do it immediately after finals in May…

That being said, if you are a rising soph, a month long travel experience is a once in a lifetime…don’t sweat it…

If you’re a junior, do not go on the trip.
You’ll have opportunities to travel later on, but not having a legit internship junior year internship will likely preclude you from most positions.
Your best bet for a long vacation will be the time in between graduation and your starting date.
If you’re a freshman/sophomore, it’s not the end of the world.

I’m currently a sophomore so according to some of the opinions posted it would be alright. It’s just this trip really isn’t something I can cancel on. I’m going to China to see my grandparents and I’ll be traveling with my family that are currently living in the US. Plus the tickets were already booked and they are quite expensive.

I guess I’ll have a chance to just get an internship starting Fall 2012 instead. I’m just looking for options to stay productive as I don’t want my whole summer to be wasted just because I went on vacation in the middle.
