Hello,
My UC GPA is a 3.46
I took honors english sophomore year, got two B's, but doesn't give me a grade bump.
I took AP Euro, got a 3 on the exam.
By the end of my senior year I will have gotten through Spanish 4, AP Stats, Physio.
Took pre Calc last year and I really struggled (2 C's).

I got a 28 on the ACT and am taking it again.

The point of my post is, if I apply to UCLA, is my effort futile? Do I have any significant chance of getting in? Say I get a 30-31 the next time I take the ACT, how does that affect my chance? I really want to go to a large sports school where I can go to the basketball and football games. I just think that my options in state are very limited as I most likely won't get into Cal or UCLA. I WILL NOT go to USC, I doubt I will get in, and I was born a Stanford fan. My CSU gpa is a 3.55 so i have a better chance at Cal Poly and SDSU, but neither is a major conference sports school.

If you can, be completely honest with me, I don't want to fill out the whole UC app for no reason. UCLA will be the only UC I apply to.

I would say that your stats are below average for admitted students however don’t rule out the other UC’s. For instance UC Davis athletics is Division 1. Younger son is participating in band camp the week before school starts and is looking forward to joining the marching band to cheer on the Aggies at the football games!

It depends on what else you can bring to the school. If there’s something special in your application, such as a really strong personal statement, then you may have a chance. As it stands, that GPA and ACT score probably will not get you in, but if you get a 31 and write good essays, you may.

Are Stanford and USC rivals? I thought the rivalries were between UCLA/USC and Stanford/Berkeley. Whatever it may be, I think admissions at USC will be comparable to those at UCLA, so why not apply there if you do at UCLA?

You probably will get into all the CSUs with your current stats. Cal is a bit of a far reach. Never really understood their admissions process as I got in yet all my friends ranked higher in my HS didn’t (I would assume it was my E.C). In my opinion you still have a chance for UCLA as I’ve seen worst scores get in though those people counter balanced it with amazing extracurricular and were quite good writers. Getting a 30+ will help you immensely though and if you’re a low income Californian resident, your chances just improved just slightly a little more. Try to raise your GPA as much as possible as of now and hope you have some decent e.c. Best of luck.

*If you truly want to get into UCLA/Cal, think about going to cc if you do get rejected the first time. I’ve had two friends who were quite adamant of going to UCLA and they both decided to just start from a cc to transfer in as they were rejected from UCLA; they did get into all their other choices but they refused to go anywhere else…

I don’t think you should be basing your college choices solely on athletics/athletic allegiances…I recommend you broaden your list of colleges and also consider the many schools without D-1 programs which could end up being a good fit for you academically.

Oh trust me I’m not making a whole decision just based on sports. I’ve grown up playing and watching sports my entire life and college football is basically a religion to me. There is nothing more enticing to me then to be able to stand in the student section and cheer on my school. I have great ECs captain of the lacrosse team 4 years on varsity, 3 years of basketball, coach basketball team, Marin School of the Arts film program, etc. I just feel like I shouldn’t fill out the whole UC app for a school that I most likely wont get into.

Applying to Cal Poly and SDSU, Indiana University, Oregon, Arizona, Ohio State, University of Washington. Everything out of state is just expensive.

I wouldn’t consider Cal Poly and SDSU a safety since they are both increasingly harder to get into (unless you are their attendance zone). You might consider Fresno State. Lot’s of kids in our area go to Oregon, Arizona or Colorado out of state. Write a passionate essay and maybe that will help. The UC application is pretty easy compared to others.
