I never exprected so many replies on tattoos. Obviously appearance is very important in our society. First impression is extremely important. That guy who has a scary appearance and is also not that good of an employee should be fired. Even if his gf does a great job there, I wouldnt keep a guy like that. If he was scary looking but an excellent worker, well....I might look the other way. Sounds like a bad employee to me.
Now back to my tattoos. What im going to get is nothing offensive at all. I consider it like having permanent artwork on my body. I am a very open minded person but I also know how the world works. I will get something that I can cover up at work all the time. Wear long sleeves or whatever. I was just being paranoid about it, but im going to go through with it.

Well, the calculation involved in keeping that guy is complicated. Sounds like some of the factors involve:

Strict business:
1.) How much does he cost by scaring customers?
2.) How much does he cost by being inept at his job?
3.) How much does his presence decrease his girlfriend's productivity by being a distraction?
4.) How much would his absence upset his girlfriend and decrease her productivity?
5.) Would she leave if he were dismissed, and what's the cost of replacing her and training her replacement? Would her replacement be better or worse at her job?
6.) Is this a long term investment? Might either of them improve considerably in the future?

In a non-business sense:
1.) "I know he's a horrible worker, but I'm trying to be nice to him."
2.) "I know he's a horrible worker, but I'm trying to be nice to his girlfriend."
3.) "Firing people is just too annoying and stressful to be worth it."

well ima a lawyer thats been working with this firm for 5 years and i have 8 tattos... when i went to the interview they didnt see them because i came i with a professional out look. people wpuldnt think anything from me.. after my 6 months was over even before that people knew i had tattoos and they didnt care. but mind u they only cared for my job not how i look in the office and the people that i worked with they were the type of people that would not hire u to work in there.. what counts is that u only show ur self n show that you're good and thats it.. ur done.. they wont care if u got 6 thousand tattoos or not.. after working in that office i got 2 peircings and that i dnt take to the office.. i take them off because that is unprofessional..

Interesting.

bluedevilmike always makes me smile :D

Sorry, mprez, but I do not believe you are a lawyer.

^^ Boy, I sure hope not!

Tattoos are really cool. All the celebrities have them. If you want to be cool like a celebrity you should get a tattoo. I would way rather be cool then be a lawyer. Just my opinion though.

I'm cool AND I'm a lawyer! (and I have tattoos) :)

^ See. You can only be cool if you have tattoos. Especially if you get one that runs along your face. That really stands out and people want to work with you. They say "he has enough money to get really sick tattoos, he must be a good lawyer!" and then everyone will hire you.

Seriously, some of these posts are kind of ludacris. To say that people with tattoos suggest mental illness, criminal history, drug use, etc amuses me. I am a 23 yr old going into my 1st year of law school. i have 8 tattoos myself, including my entire rib cage and most of my back. I am working on a half sleeve myself. I work at a hospital right now and noone seems to mind my VISABLE tattoos. You know why? because i stay professional and i do my job well. Who cares whats under your clothes as long as you do your job and do it well. It is 2009 for gods sake… some people need to take the sticks out of their bums and get over it. You can be professional and have tattoos… how many lawyers and doctors have drug and alcohol problems? No one cares as long as their job is done. Same goes for tats…

What you will learn in law school is that your demeanor AND appearance as a lawyer affects your ability to persuade juries and judges of your view point. Judges and juries expect lawyers to appear a certain way and behave a certain way. Most of them are not 23 years old and as up to date on current culture as you are. When you are 50, maybe judges and juries will agree with you. Right now, they don’t.

I’m in my fifties, and pretty comfortable in my skin. It’s not as confining as it was in my twenties, perhaps because I have so much more skin now than I did then.

If I had been inked thirty years ago, I suppose the tatoos would have expanded with the rest of my skin. Had I chosen, for instance, to preserve the image of an old girlfriend, that image probably would have morphed, as I have, into something larger and hairier, and with a few more wrinkles, sort of like the portrait of Dorian Grey. (Dorian Greybeard?)

ooo interesting topic…i’m a rising junior planning to go to law school and i have two tattoos at the moment one on each shoulder. each is easily covered by a t shirt and i’ve sort of made the promise to myself that if i can’t cover it with a t-shirt it ain’t happenin. still, i’m looking at getting a 3rd tattoo probably on my back. i’ve looked into this topic and answers vary depending on whose talking. the answer i’ve come to is that they’re becoming less and less taboo in the professional world and that if you can cover them then your employers probably won’t know about them in the first place. i’m still an undergrad so of course i don’t have personal experience but i have read a lot of testimonials and opinions from lawyers and aspiring lawyers and that’s the sense i get…still i wouldnt go get a tattoo on my neck or the side of my head…that might hurt my job prospects in the legal profession haha

I had this exact question but I’m a female. I’m about to graduate high school and I plan to go to pursue a law degree. What are your all’s opinions on female lawyers with tattoos. I don’t want many but I do want something on my forearm where it will most likely be visible.

^ my opinion, females with tattoos = not a good look, definitely lose attractiveness.

Getting back to the topic, some law firms prohibit tatoos (and piercings). Why? Because some clients, judges, and jurors will find it offensive for a well-educated attorney at law to be sporting them. These people are more imprtant to a law firm’s business than an employee. Lesson: If you feel that you MUST have a tatoo (or a piercing), make sure that it is (they are) located so that it (they) will not be seen when you are wearing your formal clothes, otherwise you will be “duh, winning”.

Don’t let what everyone says to you , mean something . I had the same question , 7 years ago. When I first started paralegal school, I have carpe diem, know your rights, & live the life you lead. & and as I went through college I felt as if maybe I’m on the wrong path, than I received a job as a paralegal and I thought maybe I was wrong. As I went through my BA degree and law
School I got more tattoos not sleeves or any face neck or hands but I got more tattoos and now where am I ? A lawyer at a law firm which was formally ran by a judge who… Has tattoos. Its not your body it’s your brain and ability to stand up and fight and for those whom say a criminal wants a professional looking, no a criminal does not care hoe you look, but how you think & work , and strive for there freedom… So if it is what you want so it because its your life and your already on the right path (:

Knowyourrights, it’s pretty clear you are not a law school graduate or lawyer.

the ignorance about tattoos is incredible. These are the types of comments I would expect to hear from racists. Very ignorant judgements about someone based on their appearance. A friend of mine has two music notes on her wrist because of her passion for music. She’s never done drugs, she doesn’t have a criminal record and she is none of the other ridiculous stereotypes mentioned by some of the other people on here.

I say ignore the raging idiots and get whatever tattoo you want to. Tattoo’s are beautiful peices of art, and though some might have the same tattoo the meaning is different and thats what makes tattoos so personal and unique.
