letter from college park

hey guys, today i got a letter from one of the recruiting officers from college park's computer science/mathematics/engineering departments. did anyone else get one of these? and does anyone know if this could be a sign of some decent scholarships?

Is it indicating any process/progress of the application ? What is it about ?

i don’t think it’s about the progress of the application. here’s what the letter actually says:

I recently reviewed your application for admission to the University of Maryland, college Park. I enjoyed reading about your interests in engineering and mathematics. You can continue to explore your interests at the University of Maryland, College Park through challenging courses, undergraduate research, and internship opportunities.

Did you know that Maryland has a Robotics team that designs and builds robots to compete against other schools and organizations?

We’d be delighted to have you viist Maryland to learn around our academic programs for talented students including the Computer Science Honors Program and our combined Bachelor’s/Master’s Program where you can earn a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in computer science in just 5 years.

If you’d like to meet faculty to discuss your interests in computer science or attend classes with a current student, please send me an email. I’d be happy to set things up.

That sounds like you got admitted O_o

Great. You may get accceptance letter for Early Action sometime in January 2011. Have a nice Holiday time and contact them to visit UMD as per their invitation and that may help you understand better. This letter must be meant for talented students. Would you mind posting your numbers (GPA, Scores and subjects) ?

My son got a similar letter about a month ago. He’s out of state which may explain the difference in when they sent it. He applied because the school seemed like a great fit. The letter really tied his interests into what was available on campus. It was extremely nice. We were impressed.

Ricepicker, was your letter from Comp Sci dept? What about your son, 2blue?

It was from the College of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences.

yeah, mine was also from the college of computer, mathematical, and natural sciences.

the letter was from tamara goyea, assistant director for recruitment and co-curricular programs

OP, to answer your original question, yes. This is the “fun” time of year when many universities send out “likely letters”/targeted recruiting . I received several, and it always meant good things such as BIG merit aid or pending acceptance at a top twenty college. Congrats and enjoy, you will probably receive many more and will have “fun” deciding where to go …

UMCP is one of the slower universities to send acceptances and merit notifications, in my very limited experience (daughter two years ago). Her numbers were similar to yours (she was in-state and also a NMF)and she received a President’s Scholarship, which was equal to full tuition.

Nice job being 1st class rank!

Good work. Your strong crediatials might have triggered a nice promoting letter and you might be the candidate for scholarships.
