letter mean something?

Hi, I'm a junior in high school and I got a letter fro Washington U in St.Louis during the summer of sophomore year saying that they hoped to see Washington U in St.Louis as one of the colleges I apply. Does that mean that I am a type of student they would be looking for? or do they send this type of letter to majority of the people?

Well, WUSTL wasn't a college I even heard about before getting that letter, and was not really a college I was thinking of applying. When I looked at the college profile on collegeboard.com, it looked pretty good. Is WUSTL considered a highly selective college of the US? I think I have a pretty good chance, but does anyone know anything about science majors/pre-med at Washington U in ST Louis and the city of St. Louis? what other colleges would be a good choice to apply to if I am considering a college a little more high ranked than WUSTL?

WUSTL is a highly selective college on par with the ivy league... and they send those letters to everyone

There aren't many schools that are ranked higher than Washu right now (at least not according to USNews)

You would have a pick of Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Caltech, Stanford, MIT, Penn, Duke, Dartmouth, Columbia, and Chicago (Cornell is tied w/ WashU @ 12th) ... I really think WashU would be just as good as any of those choices

WashU's pre-med program is one of the best in the nation (it's also super-competitive) and the Washu med school was ranked to be 4th in the nation too this past year

Also you'd be in company with a lot of other pre-med students. One unique thing about WashU in my experience (at least in conversation with friends going to other universities known for their large pre-med programs) is that here it is not at all cut-throat. I think the "Mid-Western-friendliness" of WashU is the one thing that makes it stand out in terms of other schools. I mean, I'm sure there are loads of friendly people at every school, but it's just....I don't know exactly how to describe it....One of the reasons I chose WashU over other schools was its atmosphere of positivity, and friendliness, and helpfulness. (I also had never heard of WashU until I got that letter sophomore year....haha...be prepared for loads more....but then I visited, and instantly fell in love with the school)

In almost every catagory a wonderful school!

i agree completely with eleph. Hadn't heard of the school until a friend went there last year. Then I started researching and added it to my application list. Then visited and fell in love with the school and the friendly atmosphere! You just have to visit, you'll fall in love too!

hey, thanks for your opinions. I think I'll like it too now....although 2200 SAT sounds pretty impossible for me (cuz I'm horrible at the SAT I) but I'll work hard. I'm pretty positive I'll get accepted there....although my dream was Princeton or Harvard, I guess they are little too high for me....since I moved around a lot and missed a lot of national/state competitions that my extra curricular activities are pretty weak to stand out in that pile of applications. does anyone know financial services at Wash U in St Louis?

Good luck Peace_world! Keep in mind however that WashU gets more than 22,000 applications a year and the acceptance rate has been going down. WashU has the fourth most number of National Merit Scholars out of all the national universities this year. In short, you will be competing with a lot of students at the Ivy League level.

Also I saw you mentioned that you have very little extracurriculars...I would work on that. From what I have seen, WashU and other schools of its calliber (i.e. Ivies) care more and more about ec's every because it differentiates those deserving well-rounded candidates from those who only study. So try to be as involved as possible now (junior year I presume) and throughout the beginning of senior year. Good luck!

That being said, don't go to the opposite extreme and join every single club there is. Pick several that really mean something to you. : )
