I recently learned that I am required to write a "letter of explanation" for the drop in grades I experienced in the second semester of my senior year. I went from a 4.0 first semester to a 3.0 the second (both weighted). Second semester, I got 4 C's (3 AP classes and 1 honors class, so they are all weighted) and one B (normal biotechnology class). All of my C's were straight C's, no minuses or pluses. It's also important to note that I usually earn one C every semester, so having those on my transcript is nothing new. Essentially, I completed the conditions of admission with the minimum requirements. My overall GPA is ~3.7, I've taken the SAT twice and gotten 2140 both times, and I got 700 on the Literature SAT subject test and 690 on the Math II. Obviously I'm a reasonably intelligent person, and I feel that my test scores have always reflected that moreso than my grades.

My question is, is it likely that I will have my offer of admission rescinded? It seems to me that the admissions office is simply trying to show their disapproval of my lack of effort, but they very well could be seriously considering revoking their offer. I was accepted to UC Davis as well, and while I know that it's a more academically prestigious school, I always preferred Santa Cruz. It also seems logical to me that the office of admissions would require these letters from students whose offers of admission they had no intention of revoking, but who were on the edge enough gradewise to warrant a nip in the ass, so that they wouldn't think they can laze around all day while at UCSC. Does that fact that I have to write this letter mean that my acceptance is indeed jeopardized? Or does it mean that it's already revoked and I have to win it back? Thanks for your responses, I'm just afraid I won't be able to attend this awesome school.
