Letter of Recommendation Advice

Hi Folks!

I am a 2nd year community college student at Santa Barbara City College and am planning on transfer to the film programs at either UCLA or USC. The one particular part of the admission process that I need advice on is the letter of recommendation portion. I have been employed (non film work) by a rather well known television producer for about a year now, and I figure that with a letter of rec from him would greatly increase my chances of being one of the 15 accepted transfer to UCLA. Does anyone have any advice on how to bring this up to him in the most professional/pragmatic way possible? Your comments and suggested would be of great help and I appreciate it in advance. Cheers.

If you have a good relationship with your boss, then it shouldn’t be difficult. Ask them if they have 15 mins to meet with you. Let them know what your school plans are, and let them know that a recommendation from him woukd be very beneficial for you. Then ask if that is something they’re able to do for you. Let them know that you understand if they’re not able to, and that it’s ok.

If they say yes, give them a LOT of notice- a least 1 month tho get it done. You need to provide them with info on your background outside of your job with them. Also give then info on your professional goals, and how you’re working towards those goals. All of this background info helps then write a recommendation that that paints the best picture of you.
