Letter of recommendation etiquette?

Hello!

I'm in the midst of summer applications right now. Fortunately, I had two really wonderful faculty members who were willing to write me letters of recommendation and who have already sent them out.

I was wondering what the etiquette was for thanking them? It seems like a card is considered appropriate. A small, tasteful gift, maybe? What have you all done in the past?

I write lots of letters of recommendation for students and I would consider a gift inappropriate (not offensive but over the top). A handwritten thank you note or card is classy, but an email acknowledgement is fine … and I definitely appreciate knowing how everything turned out.
