for one of the scholarships my daughter is applying to, it asks for a letter of recommendation from a parent. how should i go about doing this? has anyone had any experience, or can anyone find any examples? im not sure how to write it objectively, and exactly what to include in it? help!

They’re probably looking for a more intimate view of her personality than teacher recs can provide, but something less internalized than her own essays.

Your best bet is to avoid getting sentimental (no stories about how she always loved to ___ unless it directly connects to the point you’re making) but still personal. How does she go about setting goals and tackling them? What tough decisions have you seen her wrestle with and solve? Etc.

Take a moment to think which of your daughter’s qualities are only visible to you as a parent. What don’t her teachers see? What has she still not realized about herself?

Your biggest challenge will be to avoid writing something that sounds like a Christmas newletter (“And Darlene joined the swimming team and won three gold medals for cutest backstroke!”) or something you’d say if she was famous (“We always knew she’d become a doctor when she cut the head off her Barbie when she was five!”). Be immediate, but not necessarily objective. Your rec should be enlightening on some level, so just consider what’s compelling about your perspective on your daughter.

Best of luck!
