Letter Rejecting Admission Offers

I was luckily accepted by my dream school on March 10th. However, now I worrying about how to write a polite rejection letter to those acceptances.

Thoughts?

You should only specify some preferential details about them that you disliked, rather than things that they just need to improve. Like instead of saying “Your academics aren’t impressive enough,” say “We liked the urban campus of XYZ School” or “ABC School’s students had a sense of humor that wasn’t quite as in line with me as XYZ School.” That way, they just remember that not everyone’s gonna be into the unique things they offer, and it’s not that they’re not good enough of a school for you.

Why do you even have to explain? Can’t you just say, “Thank you very much for your kind offer of admittance. However, I have chosen to attend X. Best wishes for a great school year next fall!”

There are threads out there covering this, but post 1 and 2 express the two basic approaches that people seem to follow. Do what seems right to you. Saying thank you is always appropriate and appreciated.

I’m with @MomOutWest . Keep it simple.

Could you possibly link me to the other threads regarding this type of question?

@TryHardForLife This is a college thread, but the concept is the same:

I would agree with comment #2…when i was emailing schools I followed about the same format. However, if schools ask why you didn’t choose them, refer to comment #1. I had 1 school ask me why, just so they were aware and I said about the same thing. If they do respond to your first message with a follow up wondering “why?”, focus on what you liked at the other school instead of what you didn’t like at their school. Ex. I feel like I will be more successful in a smaller environment at a school like XYZ.

^referring to the nebulous “better fit” may be an option if pressed.
