Macalaster sends my D a lot of mail to keep her updated on the application process, more than any of the other schools she's applied to. I even got a letter from them the other day, telling me how they go about their selection process and what a great value Mac is.

I appreciate that they have a sense of humor, too. It's a nice school. Agree?

Now if March 31 would just hurry up and get here!

Their letters are friendly and quirky! My parents definitely judge Macalester, though, for its orange peel logo–they think it’s silly. I understand this, but I love their mailings anyway.

I have a question, though. Twice now they’ve sent me letters saying that I need to send my midyear report (on its way) and transcripts from the two colleges where I’ve taken classes. Online and in a format email, they say the only thing missing is my midyear report–nothing about college transcripts. Not one of my other colleges has asked for these. Does Macalester REALLY need college transcripts?

The two page letter they sent to parents the other day was very hard to follow–what was the point? It jumped around from how hard it is to get into, how good a value it is, how carefully they look at each application. It was just hard to figure out the message/purpose.

First day I got back to school and was handed three mails from Macalester (I go to school in China, and I have reservations about the Chinese postal system, so everything about college is mailed to my school). I freaked out because I hadn’t gotten any mail from any other college.

UT84321 - I totally agree with you. What a strange letter. We got ours yesterday. It was kind of a turn off for us. We had a positive impression until we got this letter.

Mac is my son’s top choice and I greet every thin Mac envelope in the mailbox with fear that it’s a rejection, so I was delighted with the parents’ letter.

Yeah, I always had the sense that Macalester was more of a hit-or-miss college when it came to mailing. 4 of my last 5 letters were from Macalester, and I never feel like they reveal much about who they are.

On that same note, have any of you guys ever received a guidebook from Macalester? I feel as though I should’ve gotten one by now, since I had expressed interest about a year ago. Carleton was sorta quick to send me one. Yale gave me one too, and I didn’t even apply there.

Yes, Mac send a lot of mail, but I found most of it funny and appreciated that they kept my daughter informed throughout the admissions process. But the best (and unexpected) mail she received from Mac was an “early write” letter in late February last year saying she was admitted. Even though she applied regular decision, they wanted to tell her early because they had made their decision and wanted for her to have an adequate opportunity to make hers.

My daughter just got one of those letters today! It was a very nice surprise. Her letter said pretty much the same thing and was very nicely worded. I love these early admits since it really takes some of the pressure off of waiting.
