Letters of Rec?

For Northwestern, do we need to have 3 letters of recommendation? And do two of them HAVE to be from science teachers?

Yes, you need three recommendations, but one of those comes from your guidance counselor - so only two academic teachers. That applies for all schools really…

And I don’t know where you got the impression that you need two science teachers. I’m sure you could do that, but I always think that two different subject recommendations are ideal. I personally got a recommendation from my English and Physics teachers. I know that certain teachers you may have a better relationship with than others and will go to them for your recommendations, but whenever feasible I think a recommendation from one humanities teacher and one math/science teacher is preferable. That shows two very different sides of you.

In addition to his counselor, my son sent recommendations from his AP Biology and AP calculus teachers.

Is it bad to only have recs from Social Science teachers when you are not interested in majoring in SS (Chemistry/Biology)?

3/4 of my Science teachers do not teach there anymore and even though I am outgoing, SS teachers are easier to connect with.

Does NU accept additional recs? I have invested a ton of my time into music and was thinking about having my music director send one (very different perspective than my AP Calc and AP English teachers)
Or does it not matter…

Kathy, I think that’s perfectly acceptable! I know a lot of kids who didn’t get Math/Science recs - I was just suggesting it as it might help show an applicant as well-rounded. You should never submit two recommendations from the same subject though. Try to mix 'em up at least a bit. Perhaps English and history or a foreign language and history, etc…

Halfsie, I personally didn’t send out any additional recs, but I see no problem in submitting one for a specialty field like music. I think Northwestern would love to see someone write highly of you for a non-academic area like music. It would only help in my humble opinion.
