How important are LORs when it's optional? My son really isn't close enough to any of his professors to get anything but generic recommendations.

Most law schools require at least a couple as part of the admissions process.

I believe that George Washington U Law School does not require LORs as well as several others.

Several schools "strongly recommend" LORs. Follow their recommendations.
A few others (Taft, Cooley) do not accept LORs; in those cases, the question is moot.

GWU says that none are required, but will accept up to three. Pitt, the University of Richmond, and Stetson also list a requirement of zero but will accept some. Since you are unlikely to be applying only to these four schools, just go ahead and have them sent anyway.
