Since you attend and have been through the audition process at OCU, so I was wondering if you could clear something up for me? My daughter auditioned in Nov for MT but got a letter offering her a place in OCU's Bachelor of Arts in Music program (no scholarship $). A week or so later she got another letter from the Dept. of Theater offering her a spot in their BFA in Acting program with a talent scholarship added. I'm a little confused about the double offer? I never heard of a school doing that but then again I'm new at this. Do you know what a BA in Music is? Is it the same as being a voice major/vocal performance? Also I have been checking OCU's website but I don't think they have the new BFA's curriculum posted. Any info on that? We would really like to know the course work. She wants to take as much voice as possible. Thanks for your help. Dori53

I'm pretty sure the BA in Music does not study with the same voice faculty as the BM in MT or vocal performance. The offer with scholarship from the theater performance dept would indicate that she had a really good monologue/acting audition, but her vocal audition did not score high enough for the BM degree. I don't know about the new BFA curriculum. Sorry I'm not more help.

I think you should call the school to ask for clarification, maybe with Mary Mowry. I'm pretty sure, though, that the BA in music degree is not the same as the vocal performance degree, which is a BM. I'm also fairly certain, unless things have changed, that the well known voice faculty only teaches voice to the VP and MT students. The adjunct voice faculty teaches the other students.

Last year we heard of students offered both the BA in music and the BA in theatre performance from MT auditions at OCU. We've heard that this year the BFA in acting has also been added, but again, you should get details from the school. The various offers do seem to be confusing, and more information should be obtained before you make a decision. It seems to me that someone at the school should lay out the differences for you, especially if the web site is not clear.

Good luck!

I don't have my paper with me, but for the BFA Acting, it's a really intense degree (in other words, you cannot double major, have a minor, or spend a semester abroad without staying more than 4 yrs). You take a whole lot more acting classes than with theatre performance, and less general theatre classes (like children's theatre). However, you take the same amount of dance and voice as with theatre performance, which I believe is 3 credits of each. You can take more if you want, though I imagine it would be difficult with the BFA program. I don't know anything about the BA music major though, sorry!

dori53,

In response to your questions about the BA Music and BFA Theatre Performance... I am a double major at OCU in BA Music, Voice and BA in Theatre Performance. Basically, the same thing happened to me last year. I auditioned MT and was told I needed to work my voice, but they offered me scholarship money to be a theatre performance major. There are about 6 of us who are double majors, like myself, in our freshman class. The benefits of double majoring are awesome. I am still able to take all the music classes, i.e. Music Theory, Piano, Choir, etc. I was really worried about what would happen with dance and voice. I have had dance classes both semesters since I have been here. I had two classes first semester (2 credit hours) and now I have two classes and 3 credit hours of dance.

When it comes to voice, it has seemed to be my only disappointment. We do not study with the Senior Faculty. We study with adjunct faculty, who are great as well, but not as experienced as the others. I am with a voice teacher who I don't feel is suited for me, however she is a great teacher. I am a belter and she is a legit-soprano. I was however, able to get a vocal coach, which has been AMAZING. I felt like I learned more last semester from my coach than my actual teacher. But no, the BA is not the same as the MT/VP voice major. It is a more generalized music major, with a concentration in voice.

As for the acting classes, the BFA is going to be hard, but it is a great program. We have a great acting faculty. The acting classes are more intense in the BFA only because it is a Theatre Major. I love my acting classes and the practicality of all that we are learning. We focus more on character research and audition technique and scene study. It is more work than the MT acting classes from what I have heard. My roomate is a MT major and she loves it, but we are in a ton of classes together.

I am sticking with the BA as opposed to the BFA only because I plan on re-auditioning for MT. For me, I feel it will be a better fit, but if I do not get in, I plan on staying on the track I am on. If your S or D wants to re-audition, it is also a great way to stay on track and up to speed with the other MT majors. We have all the same audition opportunities, except we are required to audition for the straight shows and is is optional to audition for the MT shows and operas. I have auditioned for all the MT shows and had call-backs, but don't opera, so it all works out.

Overall, OCU is a great performance school. I think since they got the offer for doubling, do it. Accepting the double major will be just as good or better than lots of other competitive schools MT programs. I highly suggest coming to OCU. I hope this covers a little bit of what you were questioning. Let me know if I can be of any more help!

Just so everyone knows, as an OCU BA Music/Theater performance major Muzykgirl has also been called back for three productions at OCU!, something many MT majors cannot say. She also had MT offers for admission from top tier schools and chose OCU. Can you tell who her MT roommate is :) Love you W.
