I just took my first practice test (the one in the Barron's book) and got a 580....

So I was just wondering if there is a huge discrepancy regarding the level of difficulty between the Barron's practice tests and the real tests. I am taking it this week and I am scared to death.

I tried to study for Level 2 (since its curve is much more generous) but I am a noob in math so if your answer is going to be "just take the Level 2 test instead"; it's not going to help me at all....lol

Retake the practice test as many times as you can before the real test and see if you improve.
That’s what the practice test is for.
Unless you are taking higher math courses in high school don’t bother with the Math2 test.

You say you are a math noob, but what courses have you taken and how were your grades?
What is your planned major and what schools are you applying to that require the SAT2’s?
Have you taken the SAT and how have you done?

Math 2 requires PreCalc, so if you are not there, do not take the M2 test.

In general, Barron’s is more difficult than the real thing because it tends to have more examples of obscure questions which only show up rarely on CB’s tests. For a “math noob” you might be better with PR or Kaplan. Of course, nothing beats CB’s Real tests.

I had a scheduling conflict with the guidance my freshman year, so I had to start off with Geometry Regular instead of Honors. I did end up getting an A though. But the following year, when I moved up to Alg2/Trig H, I did poorly and luckily pulled off a B-. Currently, I am taking PreCalc Regular. The whole course, however, is a recap of everything I learned last year in Alg2.

Btw, there is a HUGE HUGE HUGE difference between a regular class and an honors class at my school.

I am planning to major in Poli Sci / IR. I know my math score will not be as important as my scores in humanities subject tests, but I just want to show that I am not THAT BAD in math. My top schools (as of now) are Georgetown, GWU, JHU, UMich, NYU, etc. (I probably won’t get into GWU & JHU.) And nope; I did not take the SAT’s yet. But so far, I have been getting low 700’s on the practice tests that I have taken.

For someone like you, I would suggest you show your strengths and try to score very well (750+) on different subject tests. The subject tests are used to show colleges what your good at, not that “I don’t suck at math, that much.”

Spend your time studying SATII’s that your more likely to score well on.
