What are the levels of merit scholarships
I know the minimum is 7500 and the maximum is 27000 but what are the exact levels?

I got the presidential, which was the $27,000 one. I’m not sure about the others, but there is also the Dean’s Honor Scholarship which is full tuition, but you have to apply separately for it.

It looks to me like different schools treat it differently? Purdue is very stingy while
other schools offer full rides…

The levels are $7500; $15,000; $22,000; $25,000 and $27,000. There are 2 major “specific application required” merit awards. The DHS, which is full tuition and replaces the lower award; and the Community Service Scholarship which is $5,000-$15,000 and can be added to the the lower award up to the amount of full tuition. There are some others related to areas like music, but the DHS and CSS are more general and there are more of them (75 for the DHS and about 30 for the CSS, at least in the recent past). Starting next year there will also be Weatherhead scholarships, details pending.

ldavis - Every school has their own system, some don’t offer merit scholarships at all.

I realized later that I mistyped one of the award amounts. The Academic Achievement Award is $17,000 not $15,000. Most of them went up $2,000 this year, although the Distinguished Scholar Award seems to have gone up $3,000 from $22,000 last year to $25,000 this year. The top award ($27,000) is called the Presidential, and the other is called the Founder’s ($22,000 this year).

What percentage of applicants are offered the Presidential Scholar’s award? Any information would help- I’m just trying to gauge myself as an applicant for the DHS. I realize that it has a project and another rec, but if, say, 2% of EA applicants receive the Presidential then that certainly makes me feel better. Also, would it be fair to assume that SCEA applicants have a slight edge in getting the DHS?

Tulane does not publish these numbers, but I think it is fair to assume it is somewhat more than 2%. My best guess is 5-7% of the incoming class was offered the Presidential.

As far as SCEA applicants having a slight edge, you would assume that at your own peril, so to speak. This is the first year they have required that DHS applicants be EA or SCEA, and SCEA itself is only in its 3rd year (or is this the 2nd year? Whichever, it is too new to have any feel for it and Tulane doesn’t release any info about that either). My own feeling would be that it would not play a role, that by that stage all DHS applicants are judged strictly on the merits of their record. But, if they had to pick, say, the last 5 winners out of 10 that seem tied? Who knows, they might use something like that as a tiebreaker, either overtly or subconsciously. Also, keep in mind that not all Presidential winners apply for the DHS, and not all DHS applicants won the Presidential. The former fact is good for you, of course, and the latter probably doesn’t matter so much but apparently there are occasionally winners that initially were “only” offered the Distinguished Scholar award.

But this is mostly just speculation, and frankly overanalysis of the topic. Fun, but in the end not really so useful. After all, even if you knew the exact statistics, would it really affect any action on your part? If you won a Presidential scholarship, you have as good a chance as anyone of winning the DHS. Just free your mind from these externalities, focus on doing your best project, and then see what happens.

what do your stats have to be to be given a merit scholarship?

There is no set rules, but the stats do dictate who gets them and who doesn’t for the most part. Rephrasing that, they may have a grid that takes GPA and test scores and suggests a merit level, but there also is consideration of strength of schedule. I saw your PM and will respond there once I look at your stats again.

I don’t know what your stats are like, or anything, but I received the Presidential scholarship. For reference, my basic stats are:
34 ACT
4.45 WGPA (school doesn’t do UW)
top 5% (12/262)

Mine were basically the same as oceanicole for the Presidential

34 ACT
4.0 unweighted gpa (dunno the weighted)
Valedictorian, but of a very small class
Good ECs/leadership positions

Do you find about merit aid with your acceptance letter or later?

With your acceptance letter.
