Hi! We have recently added UK to our Junior daughter’s college list because it appears that she is a very likely NMF, and the automatic scholarship at UK is a game-changer. (She’s thinking of a med school path or some sort of medical field career necessitating graduate study, so a debt-free undergraduate path is a game-changer! Also, she’s our oldest of 7, so college tuition is intimidating!)
We have planned a big visit in February.
Question: how much should we assume Lewis admission for her as we research (and start to fall in love!) with UK? I’m having a hard time getting a handle on how difficult it is to get in.
Current stats:
GPA: 4.35 W (3.9 UW)
scores: 1490 SAT, no act yet
lots of APs, ECs, etc. And she’s a nice girl:)
Admission to Lewis is very difficult +4000 apply they only admit 400. It is completely random as far as I am concerned. Have said that the Lewis school is awesome.
If you are set on your kid going for free you should look at the university of Alabama. There admission is purely based on sat/act scores and gpas your kid would have a completely free ride. You also should look at north/South Dakota, Maine and unh.
I’m a big believer in scholarships. If you have 7 kids, unless you’re a fortune 500 CEO with a multi million dollar salary, you’ll be bankrupt. In the end, medical schools are concerned with mostly grades and MCAT scores. If she can start med school without debt, she’ll be that much more ahead. A lot of medical students start their undergraduate at prestigious schools and end up getting into medical school with 150k or more in debt. Add another 200k to that for med school and you have a the very reason why no one wants to be a family doctor.
Alabama NMF scholarship is great but it isn’t a full ride either. Historically the Patterson at UK was full ride, but now has about the same four year net out of pocket cost as Alabama. For in state students with KEES money, UK will cost less.
Good luck @sevenbabies. DS is waiting to hear also.
