Liberal Art College w/ Strong Art Department

Hello All,

I am going crazy looking for a liberal arts college that has a strong art department.

At first I wanted a top art school, but I dont want to just study art and be brainless about everything else. I want a good liberal art foundation too.

If anyone knows of a college like this, or can be any help at all, I would really appriciate it. Thank you.

P.S. I would love to go to a college in a urban area too. :)

skidmore is known for it's great balance between art and non-art

Skidmore certainly come to mind as does Vasser. There are some schools that are larger than the typical LAC,but are similar in education. Washington University St. Louis would be a good example of this. Goucher is a good liberal arts college that allows you to take art courses in nearby MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art). Brown is a top notch university that allows you to take courses in nearby RISD.

All the women's colleges are excellent, with Smith having by far the largest art department (and a brand new building, and a large teaching museum.) Area is a happening town.

The best for art history (by some distance) is Williams. Vassar, NYU, Wellesley, Smith, and Mount Holyoke are also very strong.

Williams has a strong studio art department in a topnotch liberal arts setting (but it's definitely NOT urban). Skidmore, Hamilton, Wesleyan, Connecticut College are also good.

Bard College, north of New York, is also renowned for having a strong art program.

Scripps. Suburban, but within easy reach of the L.A. and the whole So. Cal. art scene. Much better studio arts than Williams, Hamilton, Wesleyan, Brown.

And the whole campus is one large "art work".

Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It's near the downtown area.

Strongly aggrees with BARD
