Liberal arts with strong art and design dept.?

Does anyone have recommendations of liberal arts colleges in urban locations featuring a broad art and design department? I know that I want to attend a LAC, but would like that its art program has a variety of concentrations or majors because I'm not sure what area I'm dedicated to yet. I'm looking at schools like Washington University in St. Louis and Temple University. Thanks for your opinions!

Well Temple is not an LAC, I can tell you that. We do, however, have a very, very strong art and design department, as I’m sure you know.

WUSTL is a signicantly better school than Temple, ranking wise. Neither of them are “liberal arts colleges”.

That said, WUSTL seems to be pulling some marketing stunts lately. Personally, I am turned off by that and wouldn’t want to attend.

My mistake about the LAC’s. I should have said that I’m looking for more liberal arts colleges, because currently I have quite the list of universities.

Maybe so, but our art department is ‘signicantly’ better than WashU’s. Our social scene and student body is also much, much more fun and not lame like theirs. We’re also not in the boring town of Clayton, Missouri.

What do you think makes Temple’s dept. so much better than WUSTL’s, diontechristmas?

I’m not really sure, since art isn’t my area, but it is widely regarded to be one of the two best public art departments in the country. I’m sure it’s up there overall.

We appreciate your school spirit, diontechristmas, but as you said yourself, “Art isn’t your area.”

Temple’s School of Art has a very strong studio arts program but it is NOT “significantly” better than the Sam Fox School at WUSTL. They are both good, solid programs that are well-known in the art world.

Yes, it is significantly better.

Some small liberal arts colleges with good studio art (and art history) departments are: Williams, Wesleyan, Hamilton, Kenyon, Oberlin, Vassar, Skidmore, Conn College. Smith if you are female.

I’d note, however, that most LAC art departments focus on traditional fine arts – painting, drawing, sculpture, photography – and less on design and new media. As a function of size (i.e., small) you’re not going to get broad.

Thanks for the input momrath!

Just curious, diontechristmas – Do you have any actual facts to back up your claim that Temple is so superior to WUSTL in this particular area? I’d really be interested in hearing them. I agree that Tyler has a good art program but Fox @ WUSTL does too.

Significantly better.

^^Yes, as I thought, it’s just your personal opinion. That’s fine.

Don’t mind him, worried_mom. He’s just a mouthpiece for Temple. He doesn’t really know what he’s talking about; he’s a student at Temple.
