Liberal Arts Colleges

I’m just doing a preliminary college list and I would really love to add some liberal arts colleges. What are LACs that have really great or are known for their psychology program?

Vassar, Clark

Many LACs have wonderful psychology programs. My D was a psych major at Lafayette College – she loved the school. enjoyed her classes and professors, and had the opportunity to work on 4 different research projects (one of which will hopefully be published in an academic journal soon). She has friends who got into psych PhD and other great programs from Lafayette (my D is now at Columbia studying speech pathology). Lafayette offers both a BS (requiring more science classes) as well as a BA in psychology so there are options depending on what type of focus you want.

I would focus on schools that are in your academic wheelhouse and that appear affordable after running the NPC. You can look at the courses offered online at most college websites.

What selectivity level are you looking for?

For colleges strong in psychology, look for course elements that include the major branches of modern psychology: clinical, cognitive, educational, developmental, personality, physiological, sensory and social.

Look into Bates, Hamilton, Pitzer, Gettysburg, Lewis & Clark and, if female, Smith.

Dancer, excellent description of the psychology curriculum at LACs that may be of interest.

^ Note, however, that while the descriptions should be of helpful interest to you, an evaluation of the respective colleges’ actual psychology programs was not factored into the rankings provided.

Thank you guys so much @TheGreyKing @happy1 @marvin100 I’m looking for something within the 50% admitted range. Thank you also to @merc81 and @CrewDad. I really appreciate you guys responding

For less selective options, look into Albion and Roanoke, @Dancer14.

These aren’t LACs, but I was impressed with U of Rochester and Tufts if you are interested in clincal psychology

I’ll definitely look into these schools @merc81 @citymama9 thank you

Clark has an acceptance rate that works for you and a great psychology program.

If you are looking for schools in the 50% acceptance rate range I’d look at Clark.

Whitman (WA), Lewis & Clark (Portland)

Most good solid LACs have good solid psychology departments. You don’t need to worry about which is the “best” for psychology or even which is “good” for psychology - focus on the overall academic and undergraduate experience

That said, Clark is a really great recommendation, as are Whitman and Lewis & Clark (and Vassar, though it is selective). Also check out Rhodes College, Occidental (a little more selective at 45%, but negligible difference), College of Wooster, Furman University, Kalamazoo College, Hobart & William Smith Colleges, Lawrence University, University of Puget Sound, Muhlenberg College, Wofford College.

Do you have any geographic preferences?

Thank you @Lindagaf @happy1 @insanedreamer for the recommendations. Thank you @juillet I am in state California so it would be lovely to do in state for tuition cost but I’m also not opposed to breaking out of comfort zone and living somewhere else for the experience.

These are all private universtities so you wouldn’t get a difference in tution based off of where you live. If you want recommendations, I would suggest giving us details about your preferences on location and or anything else you’d like to mention.
