Hi- I am a liberal arts major and I have managed to land several interviews for both summer internships and summer sophomore experiences at Merrill Lynch, Liberty Mutual, Deloitte, and BP to name a few. I participated in PwC's 3 day long eXpedition program and Capital One's week long program for freshman and sophomores. Also I have a 3.4 GPA (don't judge- I'm working on it) and have had several internships since junior yea in high-school.

I am still waiting to hear back ( had most of the interviews within the last 3 weeks).

What are my chances for being selected as a summer intern/ to participate in their summer programs?

Assuming your interview goes well, it sounds like you have a pretty great shot. A 3.4 is nothing to be ashamed of!

Out of curiosity, what is your major/what type of coursework have you taken? How did you make yourself marketable to these companies to land these internships? I’m a fellow liberal arts major considering working in business and I’d really appreciate your input.

@seke67 I am a double major in comm and organizational development. I think my past experiences and minor in fine arts really made me stand out from the other candidates. Alot of the interviewers told me that I stood out and seemed very unique compared to their other candidates.

If I were you I would just try to get as much experience as possible wherever and whenever you can- nonprofits, student orgs, 3 day programs, etc. But make sure you are genuinely interested in them so that you excel. Don’t be afraid to apply to something just because you are not a “business major”!

They are looking for skills that can be attributed to a certain internship/ position not only a heavy background in business/finance/marketing/etc. Also show that you are super passionate about something besides only business on your resume. It will give you a personality and a great conversation starter with interviewers or contacts. (I played up my interest in arts.)

It does a lot. Thank you so much and best of luck on your interviews! I’m sure you’ve got the internships in the bag but be sure to share how everything turns out.
