Liberal Studies Core Program - Tisch Film Track

I've been looking for an explanation of how the LS Core Program works, but all explanations online seem to be vague. I was just sent a letter detailing my specific situation, given that I'll be a Film and Television major at Tisch after completing the LSP in Freshman year.

This isn't the same situation that NYU CAS students who were pulled into CAS will be in, since they have to complete two years in LSP. But I'll be copying the letter I received, since I think there's information there to glean for anyone in the LS Core Program.

Congratulations on your recent acceptance to the Core Program in Liberal Studies on track for a
transition to the Kanbar Department of Undergraduate Film and Television at Tisch School of the Arts.
The admissions committee believes this program will be an excellent way to start your studies at New
York University. We hope this FAQ sheet will answer some questions you may have about this unique
and exciting program at NYU.

What is the Liberal Studies-Tisch Film Track? How does is this program differ from the Liberal Studies Core program?

Students who applied to Kanbar Department of Undergraduate Film and Television at Tisch School of the
Arts who are admitted to the Core Program in Liberal Studies will spend their freshman year within the
Liberal Studies Core program. You will be a fully matriculated student in the Core Program in Liberal
Studies for your first year only. During your freshman year, all Liberal Studies students take liberal arts
courses that fulfill NYU-wide general education requirements. All of the courses taken in the freshmen
year of Liberal Studies will apply to the Tisch general education requirements for the BFA degree.

Freshmen take Cultural Foundations I and II, and Social Foundations I and II, core courses that are
based on a reading of the great books from antiquity to the beginning of the modern era. In Cultural
Foundations students study literature, the visual and performing arts, and music. In Social
Foundations students study history, philosophy, and political and social theory. Taken together, the two
sequences can be seen as an introduction to the intellectual heritage upon which modern ideas were built
and as an introduction to the skills in critical analysis and synthetic thinking that students need for
successful study in all academic disciplines.

Freshmen are also required to take two semesters of writing. Writing I concentrates on the fundamentals
of clear and correct expository writing. Writing II continues this work and also teaches students how to
research, document and write a college term paper. Liberal Studies freshmen pursuing degrees at TSOA
can take a specially designed Writing II section entitled, The Artist and Critic in New York, a research and
writing class that focuses on the role and influence of artistic critics. In addition to working with theoretical
texts, visual texts, research, and their own writing, students take advantage of the city's art offerings by
way of field trips to museums and galleries.

When will I start my studies in Tisch Film and Television? What courses will I take?

You will begin your Film and Television coursework as a fully matriculated Tisch student in the Summer of
2015. During the summer, you will register for either a core production course or two scriptwriting
courses.

Is my admission to the Tisch School of the Arts guaranteed?

Yes, your admission to the Tisch School of the Arts is guaranteed as long as you maintain a 2.0 GPA.

Will my Film and Television curriculum be any different from students starting in the
department as freshman?

Yes. You will enter the Film and Television program during the Summer of 2015 and begin your
production coursework with the sophomore level curriculum. All students will be on track to complete their
coursework in the Core Program and Film and Television within four years and graduate in May of 2018.

Will I still have liberal arts requirements to complete after freshman year?

Once you have successfully completed your freshman year, you will have satisfied a minimum of 24
credits of the required 44 credits of general education requirements for the Film and Television degree.
You will complete the remainder of your general education courses within the College of Arts and Science
throughout the rest of your three years at NYU.

Will I be provided with financial aid for the Film summer courses?

In order to receive Summer 2015 financial aid, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must
be completed by March 1, 2015. If you demonstrate financial need, you will receive 1/3 of your academic
year scholarship that transferred with you from the Core Program in Liberal Studies toward Summer 2015
if enrolled half time (at least 6 credits). The NYU Office of Financial Aid may also include loans via the
Stafford and Parent PLUS loan program to cover any remaining expenses.

Question 6 in particular answers something I've been wondering about the Liberal Studies Scholarship I was given; it will carry over to Tisch, so it will apply for all 4 years at NYU. I assume the same goes for LS Core Program students who will enter other schools.

Based on this letter, I also wonder if one criteria for choosing students to place into LSP is financial need. Maybe this is a way to give some students larger scholarships without making the school they originally applied to give the money for it.
