Liberal Studies Program --> Stern

Does anyone know if NYU is accepting Stern applicants to the LSP for this admissions year? My scores are higher than Stern's average but my GPA is lower. I feel like I would be a good candidate for this if they are still doing it.

Yes, I believe they are still accepting Stern applicants for LSP. I’m not 100%, so don’t quote me on this, though…

^No, they’re not. The NYU graduating class of 2011 is the last class in which there was an LSP track to Stern.

collegecc4: You can’t apply directly to LSP anyways, so I guess applying to Stern is your only option. If your scores are above average, I think you’d have a good shot.

Wait really? I could have sworn I talked to a kid here who said he was doing LSP to stern. Maybe I heard him wrong but I definitely remember he said he didnt’ get accepted to Stern so how else could he have been here?

Weird. Well I’m a little bit confused too so if anyone knows for sure please let me know.

It’s definetly a No. The program was different a few years ago and went under a different name. When the program changed, Stern decided against being apart of it.

^Exactly. The name changed from GSP to LSP for the class of 2012, and the LSP curriculum itself changed for the class of 2013.

thestorm: Maybe the kid you talked to was planning to try to transfer into Stern upon completion of LSP. I know kids who have done this successfully, but it’s not a guaranteed admission like it is into CAS, Steinhardt, etc, from which students are placed into LSP. You’re only guaranteed a spot in the school to which you originally applied.

Any idea on the chances of successfully doing that?

collegeccc4:
Chances are very low. I personally know 7 people that finished LSP in hopes of getting into Stern, and ALL were rejected. I think they had decently high stats (all of their GPA’s were 3.5+), and are now doing CAS Econ.

To address the whole myth that students do LSP–>Stern:

This is completely false. What was said previously is correct, back when it was the Global Studies Program, there was the possibility of transferring to Stern. However,now that it is LSP, there is a small possibility, but there are no automatic transfers. I know some people that have claimed to be LSP transferring to Stern, and sometimes I cannot help but wonder what is going on in their heads. I understand a lot of people want to transfer, but to come to NYU and take a gamble like that is completely ludicrous. You can easily transfer from LSP to CAS, but not directly to Stern.

I understand that was a bit unnecessary, but it really gets me riled up when these people try to prove me wrong, and claim that they know more about MY program than I do. This has happened several times, lol.

woodendynomite pretty much got it right. Any LSP student who says they’re on a track to Stern must mean that they intend on applying for internal transfer to Stern upon completion on LS, in lieu of a “guaranteed transfer” into the school where they originally applied (CAS, Gallatin, Steinhardt, Tisch Film). Up until the admissions cycle for the c/o 2011, a Stern applicant could be accepted, rejected, waitlisted, or referred to LSP. Since then, however, Stern only admits, rejects, or waitlists.

Though my anecdotal evidence differs from yours (I personally know several LSP students who transferred into Stern with strong but not stellar GPAs), an internal transfer into Stern is in no way something that should be taken for granted. It’s pretty difficult, especially if you haven’t taken any math, econ or open-access Stern courses during LSP.

Thanks for the advice. I don’t think I’m going to risk it.
