Liberals at BC?

I was accepted to BC and have been trying to decide if it’s the right place for me. I applied to BC because of their GREAT academics, the location, and the beautiful campus. I love the academic side of BC, but the problem is the social side. I am very liberal and a Unitarian Universalist. I like diversity and I like open minds. I’m not looking for a school where everyone is exactly like me, I just want a school where no one is judged for their beliefs, traditions, or opinions.

I was mostly looking for some people’s ideas about the atmosphere at BC and if a person like me would fit in. I was also accepted to Reed and have been trying to decide between the two. I know that Reed is obviously the more liberal school, but I just wanted some more opinions of BC’s social scene. Thanks!

You may not believe it, but the only conservative side of BC is the administration. The students at BC are generally very liberal. Just a few years ago, there was a protest supported by the majority of studetns against the BC administration for barring a GLT (Gay, Lesbian, Transgender) dance. Clearly everyone is going to pass judgement on you for anything you believe in; however, the students here aren’t going to hold your beliefs against you. The student community here is very accepting of people of all different backgrounds.

Agree with miragemirage, people here really do not care about your religion. And if you look at the geographic distribution of BC students, a huge majority comes from the northeast and from california, both very liberal areas. I would say the student body is a good mix of liberal and conservative, but nobody disassociates because of politics.

I am one of the many loud mouth liberals on campus. Although I would consider BC as the most conservative among the universities in Boston (this is Boston we are talking about), it’s comparatively liberal anywhere else. I think BC is one of the few places where you can be a liberal or a conservative and not feel like a pariah.
