I was most disappointed to learn that the campus libraries are not open later on the weekends.
Has anyone else found this to be a problem for students who have heavy workloads and would like a quiet place to study during these times?

Yes, it would be convenient if the library was open longer on weekends. Especially if that's when you do the majority of your work. On weekdays the library is open 24/7. I guess they cut down on expenditures by closing the library during nights on the weekend.

i totally agree with Holdon, I visted and was disappointed by the hours
i mean the library is FABULOUS, but the hours are not so much
my guide was like, people don't study on the weekends, which i'm sure is a lie
i also asked a rep about it, and he was like, oh the hours are not bad...

My sense of Emory is that if students want a change, it can happen. Maybe you should try!

Just a thought... but maybe this is Emory's way of forcing all those hard-working student to decompress for a few hours? ;) I mean, if Woodruff Library is open CONTINOUSLY (24/7) from Sunday 12 Noon until Friday 8 PM, and then opens again on Saturday at 9:00 AM and stays open until 8PM, isn't that enough hours to be convenient? I notice that during the week leading up to finals week, they increase the weekend hours; and during finals week, it's open for the duration even on the weekend.

I don't know of many schools who do significantly better in hours of service. Are there many who go beyond this?

Also, that's what lounges in the dorms are for. People get creative; I've seen people do work in the laundry room.

The 24hr schedule begins again on Sundays at noon. Friday late nights, Sat late nights, and Sun mornings are the off-times, I believe.

soddy

or just be like me and have a single- its amazing

There's really no reason why people should need to have late-night access on Friday and Saturday or early Sunday morning. Like anything else, plan ahead, manage your time, find ways to make it work. My guess is that closing the library is probably a financial decision, but there's nothing wrong with kicking the kids out of the library during late hours on the weekend and early morning on Sunday; otherwise some would never come up for air, LOL. I remember Stanford mentioning something about that many years ago when my son started there. Later on, they cut additional hours for budgetary reasons and got a lot of flak for it, but originally there was that reminder from administration that there was more to college than studying. Like beer pong. Okay just kidding. Sort of. ;)

Any attempt to justify closing the library at one of the top colleges in the nation is pathetic and disheartening. People should not have a library limit when they can get serious work done. Personally, I have found that it is near impossible to get any effective studying done anywhere in my freshmen residence hall. Often times, Friday and Saturday nights are the best times for me to get work done, and it is not the fault of poor time management. I'm sure that this is the case with many students.

I would expect Friday and Saturday nights to be pretty quiet in the residence halls because so many people go out for the evening. However, if that's not the case, another untapped resource is campus religious buildings. My roommate last year used to go study at the Catholic Center. Homey, quiet, and flexible hours. :-)
