Problem: I know a guy at NYU who is white as can be. I've seen pictures of his entire family so I know he is not black nor has black heritage. Yet one day when we were out drinking he told me that he put down "black" on his application and that was how he got into the college. I verified this with his student profile and it came back true as he was listed as a black student. Should I just forget about it or what? He's already a student so I guess there is no harm. The only problem is that his stats were unbelievably low for NYU and he is now doing subpar (below a 3.0 gpa).

That's pretty low... but there's not a whole lot you can do about it now. If you've told him you disapprove, that's pretty much all you can do.

hey, his family could be "albino" black...

Yeah that is pretty low but hey.. what do you do but shake your head at him. Now if he starts walking around calling people "nigga" you have my permission to shoot him. I'll willingly take the charges.

My guess is that if he's lying, he will eventually be found out.

However, there are plenty of people who look white but consider themselves African American because they have parents or ancestors who were black Africans. Under the U.S.'s traditional policies about race, having one drop of black blood meant that one was considered black.

Consequently, people like Adam Clayton Powell, the late congressman from Harlem, looked white and had a dad who looked just like Mark Twain, but both considered themselves black and were viewed as such by the country including the black community.

Consequently, there's always the chance that your acquaintance really does have black blood but now is trying to pass for white. I went to college with a couple of black students who looked white, but really had African American ancestry, and identified fully with being African American. This included a guy with white skin and straight blond hair.

All of this makes a statement about how ridiculous it is to try to divide people into racial categories.

affirmitive action at its finest.....

I smell a troll here. Public student profiles do NOT list race.

On the NYU site it says "The Public Directory contains name, address, and email information for NYU faculty, staff, students, and facilities."

Yep, he is a Stern troll. I wouldn't bother arguing with him. If you look at his past posts you can see there is a consistent lack of logic. Also there are several other threads where he has trolled.

rofl, sternman goes out drinking underage

at least if you troll, dont make urself look stupid

"student profile" = facebook?

I am a current NYU student and none of the information for students makes any reference to race: transcripts, financial aid information, nothing!!

regarding lying about race: I know someone who was admitted into my PhD program @ NYU that lied about their race. Once the school found out, the student was dropped from the program and now has to pay back the scholarship money.

After all has been said and done, any undergrad student that has an overall GPA of 2.0 will get a degree that states: New York University, Leonard N. Stern School of Business. If he does not maintain the 2.0, he will be on academic probation. If he does not maintain the terms of his probation, they will ship his happy butt home.

IF he has scholarship money where the conditions are tied into maintaining a 3.0, don't worry, he'll ask you to borrow a few $$ until he gets on his feet as NYU will snatch back their $ quick, fast and in a hurry.

Sanluisfreak....I don't think that it's so much affirmative action at its finest as it is opprotunism at its worse. The system is flawed but his usage of it would be wrong even if the system were not.

Ohhhh how I love the nonsense posts that pop up on CC. :)
