Life at UCSB

I've just been accepted to UCSB and really wanted to get a feel for what kids do on the weekend... I already know theres a whole load of partying going on, but if you want to get away from all that, is it possible? I dont have anything against having a good time, but sometimes you need a break. Just making sure that if you wanted to really study, it wouldnt be so hard to do. Also, how often is everyone at the beach down there? I would get so distracted! or maybe that would help me think? maybe i should think of it like that...

simple, just go to the library. No one is gonna drag you along

best thing you can possibily do is go visit the campus, that's what I plan to do next week during my break to help make my decision.

If I were you, the only thing I would worry about is not being able to concentrate from all the good looking women walking around.

I don't get involved in the party scene, and even though many of my friends do...they don't force me to go. And in terms of studying, there are plenty of quiet places in UCSB to study. Stay away from DP though.

what's DP?

thanks guys... im going down in a couple weeks to check it out...should be fun

i'm going to visit on thurs. does any1 want to give me a tour of campus, with a viewing of the dorms?

DP is short for Del Playa Drive. It is the square mile in Isla Vista that has become infamous for parties.

Check out this topic:

i had the same toss up when considering UCSB, but really before you decide to go there visit IV at night, if you can handle passing up on that....you'll be golden

so as long as we stay away from IV, we can survive SB?

theres no way you can stay away from it unless you don't party at all...just dont be an idiot about it, and start building your tolerance up now

i;ve never been to a party (cept for birthday parties) so i guess i'm fine...

For the freshmen who want to stay away from DP:
If you live in Santa Cruz hall, Anacapa Hall, Santa Rosa Hall, San Nicolas Hall, San Miguel Hall, Francisco Torres (Santa Catalina), you practically live away from the party scene on DP. The only way you can get affected by DP is if you choose to go to the parties.

If you live in Manzanita Village and San Rafael Hall you will be closer to DP than any campus owned residential property. If I can give any advice, for the freshmen who do not like the party scene in DP, try not to live in Manzanita and San Rafael.

For the Transfer Students who are worried about DP:
People who live in San Clamente, Santa Ynez, El dorado, West gate, and all the Apts on the east side of IV will never have to deal with the parties in DP. You really don't have to spend any energy trying to avoid DP. If you live on the east side of Isla Vista you have bike paths leading to the campus and you never even have to go through IV.

I would like to just stress the fact that there are many students (like me) at UCSB who don't party. They are perfectly fine.

Why Else Would You Go To Sb Except For Dp?!?!?! U All Are Crazy

maybe cause we had to go ucsb cause we werent wanted anywhere else and we plan to get out asap?

lol...I'll admit, you will find a good amount of people like CAKI at UCSB.

hey, im going to ucsb on exchange next fall. i’m from new zealand, and was wondering how easy/hard it would be to fit in, and also the best accomodation choices so i can meet lots of americans, not just mingle with international students? cheers

kiwigirl22, I know of 2 New Zealanders going here, one of which is a transfer. She seems to be doing fine and has plenty of friends. Americans are intrigued by the accent lol.

You’ll fit in just fine… a certain kind of person goes to UCSB… my perception of New Zealanders as a stereotype is that they are chill and laid back… perfect for our school… heck even the French students here fit in great (if that isn’t encouraging to you I don’t know what is lol). Try to live in FT (officially it’s called Santa Catalina dorm… do some research on it;)
