Anyone have done this in the past where you take another class at another school to get credit? I’m doing two applications this week.
Michigan State University:
PHYS 183B Calculus-Based physics 1 (failed at my current school but don’t offer it over the summer) Nowhere at my area offers it.
The University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign:
MATH 415 Applied Linear Algebra
It’s not unusual for students to do this, especially in the summer terms. It’s wise to check with your current school to ensure they will accept the course.
People do this for various reasons…the other school is cheaper or easier, or maybe they want a more prestigious school’s name somewhere on their resume. With the abundance of online courses, you can take a class from just about any college. Usually admission to summer sessions are not competitive
If you want transfer credit from your home university, clear the course with your university before enrolling. You do not want to spend the time, effort, and money on a class that won’t be accepted for transfer credit.
You should know that taking required courses (say, physics or calculus for pre-med requirements) at a school that’s much easier than your own is often not a good idea, even if you get credit for it from your home university. Grad schools don’t like this move because it’s seen as an attempt to artificially boost your GPA.
I have friends who take summer classes at different schools, such as a community college or state school, to get credit for their major by taking pre-req classes such as organic chemistry or physics. Check with your advisors to make sure that you can do so, and see what the policy is for credit (e.g. does the grade transfer over, or is it just the number of credits?). For example, at my school, the policy for taking courses at a different school is that these courses can only be pre-req courses and a minimum grade. If I were you, I’d meet with your advisor and the registrar to see how you can go about this.
